can a JPJ screw the system by saying he is hurt for the entire year so he doesn't have to play and the year still counts, all the while drawing a paycheck? inquiring minds wanna know.
Reading the sides are still far apart, and JPJ had requested a trade. The Steelers have listened, but nothing serious, as they want a premium pick for him. Not sure if any of this is true, but the Steelers had better not give him away for a 3rd or even a 2nd. It has to at least be a 1st-rounder.
Yeah, but they can franchise him next year just for spite.

Agreed. Play hard ball because they can still franchise him next season.
They can send him to a third party to determine if he is hurt... otherwise players could just claim phantom injuries rather than retiring and collect tge rest of their contracts

My annoyance with the team not getting a deal done has now shifted to JPJ for not having himself prepared to play the season opener or holding out with a fake injury.

More likely he would come back with 5 or so games left to prove his fitness. Sit the whole year with a back injury and teams are not going to risk $30m a year on a long-term contract.
By all accounts the back injury was a major reason the Steelers didn't negotiate with Porter earlier.
The longer the other DBs keep playing and hopefully improving, JPJs value will drop.
I would force him to have an eval by a medical team and if fit to play he should at least participate in practices.
Just have an inkling that he and his dad might be in Coach McCarthy's doghouse.

NO, they would put him on injured reserve and him and the insurance company negotiate his pay.
Also I think by wee k 8 or 10 he has to report in order for it to count a year, although injuries can hinder things.
Steelers don't negotiate beyond start of season, so we will see how that plays out................................ exceptions, none to date.
It's a bad situation and could get worse by becoming a distraction, but that's part of why they don't negotiate into the season, to curtail distractions.

I gotta be honest. I dont really know who to blame in this situation. The market was well defined early. The team put him on the back burner took care of Benton and Washington. I think your guys ideas of trade compensation are a pipe dream. I see them getting a 1st from a contender which means bottom 10 pick.
Like if hes worth all some of you are saying in a trade......he should be highest paid corner in league or damn near.
