Steelers select Dri Archer in Round 3

Hmm, mostly, it isn't that we think the coaches and FO can't do anything wrong. Rather, we don't consider every move they make that doesn't match up with our expectations to be completely stupid with no forethought whatsoever.

Some of us have even said that we said the we wouldn't have taken Archer, either. Because the Steelers did, we assume they had some idea of the player and expectations. Or, as I said earlier, maybe they were napping in the War Room and someone said "Hey, you are up", they sorted their spreadsheet by combine 40-times and came up with Archer.

It isn't about matching up with expectations. Nobody in this entire thread said they were asleep and then woke up just in time to draft Archer by looking at spreadsheets. Nobody said that but that's how these threads get epic. Strawmen and over the top hyperbole. I'm sure the Steelers wanted him and they got exactly what they wanted. Just like when Tenn. drafted Young. They got exactly what they wanted. I don't think for a minute that any NFL team (even horribly ran teams like the clowns) doesn't do their very best on draft day or any other day. They're professionals and get paid to do it. No one is arguing that.

But the fact remains that 99.9% of the people on here that love the pick only love it because the Steelers picked him. Half of those never heard of him before the pick. Then there are some of those that would absolutely blast any other team in the league for drafting him because of his height, size and lack of PR ability in college. Then there are those that blast the Raiders over the years for always going for speed. They want football players not just speed. But now, **** it, he is fast. Hell listen to the coaches. Tomlin's response to all the questions about Archer is "He's fast". Not he is a football player. Not he's a great RB. Nope, he's fast.

Then when Tomlin realizes that all he is talking about is speed later on he says:

“Speed is an asset, but I don’t think it was something at the top of our agenda board,” said Tomlin. “We value guys whose speed is an asset for them, but we don’t place too much of a value on it. They have to be football players first. The guys we acquired who happen to be really fast also happen to be very good football players. I don’t want to underrate that.”

Really? So if Archer ran a 4.5 he'd still be your guy? Yea, they just spent an entire off season talking about getting faster on offense and defense but they don't place too much of a value on it... riiight. This is my issue with Tombert.

You guys don't see that both sides engage in hyberbole and straw man ****, is the problem. If someone is trying to see the upside of the pick or take the position that the FO isn't throwing away the pick, then they must think the FO can do no wrong. ****, they probably know what Tomberts **** tastes like.

Someone said that Archer wasn't a third round grade. He was picked at a spot after all of the normal third round picks. What would, without compensatory picks would be the 4th round. When it is pointed out that some sites did indeed have him listed as a 3-4th round pick it is "who the **** cares what nfl.com said". Later, nfl.com's description of his weaknesses is posted as to show how it matched up with what is being described as his weaknesses in this thread.

Few have given over the top glowing recommendation s of the pick. Tibs, probably, most of all and I sorta felt like he was just ******* with people.

True, both sides do it. However when people like TMC point out very obvious flaws he gets hammered because he doesn't tow the company line. The NFL is getting bigger, faster and stronger and small players like Archer don't make it very often. Even when they do "make it" they are average at best players. KC had McCluster and they loved him so much that they let him go after his rookie contract. There are almost always glowing recommendations of the pick, especially by local sports people. I remember all the glowing recommendations after the 2008 draft. People were thinking 1974 all over against. They stole Mendy and Sweed.

Yes, Archer was selected in the late 3rd round. But this was a deep draft and the Steelers are in need of starters on offense and defense. Drafting a part time player (even the Org. admit this) that has no chance of ever starting was a luxury they did not have. Yes, Archer was mocked in the 3rd and 4th rounds but mocks are lists of players without team specification. If Seattle picked him in the 3rd then I could understand it better. They have starters and backup players. Archer would be a luxury they could afford. I still wouldn't like the pick for them but I could understand it better.

Actually, I thought your post was a very good idea. Since I did not see a bunch of guys I wanted ahead of him that were still there I may have not posted one. It would be nice to have the guys that really go into the draft evaluations to post their guys for later review. It might be nice to start a post draft mock for next year during the draft. When the steelers pick if anyone wants to they can pick someone else out of who is left all through the draft. Might be interesting to see who stays the same and who changes as well as how many guys are busts.

This is the best idea I've seen in quite some time. I say a livemock where you pick someone else who was still available, and that's your guy, and we see how he does. Provided you didn't like the selection the Steelers made that is.

"no chance of ever starting"
can we hold you to this?

If you are talking to me then yes. Tomlin and Haley have spoke openly about using him in certain packages and as a change of pace RB. You think he is going to start over Bell at RB? You think he is a better slot WR than Lance Moore? Where is he going to start? His college coach admitted that moving him to WR was just to showcase him and that he should have played him strictly at RB. But if it makes you feel any better you can hold me to that.

you probably should have included "barring injury, disaster or lack of devotion to being a professional" to your statement.

I like the pick because the Steelers made it. No doubt. You know why? Because what other ******' choice do we have?

This is where I get frustrated with the negative crowd. If we had some control over the situation, maybe I could understand. We don't. Archer is a Steeler. And don't give this **** about it being a message board. It passed by hiding behind that excuse about 90 pages ago.

I like the pick because I flat out refuse to be miserable about something before I have to be. I am going to be positive and think he could be the guy that defies the odds. If he does, great for us and the Steelers. If not, well at least I didn't get too upset until I had something to be upset about.

Every year before the season begins I think the Steelers have a chance to win the Super Bowl. What fun can it be to think they can't? That is all this is, trying to remain positive.

GREAT mind set !!!!! I too, think we will win the super bowl every year. I've been right, near 14% of the time :)

Well, that's pretty much it in the nutshell for me. I take no joy, zero, in the Steelers choosing poorly in the draft. So, even when it appears, according to some here, that they did, I stay focused on what the guy "might" be able to do, and stay positive. I do this in life as well, I've worked with people who spend every ******* day looking for something to be miserable about, and when they find it, they go on and on till they are so annoyed about it, they just can't see it any other way.

I've just never gotten that, if he sucks, I'll admit he sucked (Troy Edwards anyone? Zo Jackson? Limas Sweed?) But for ***** sake, I sure as hell am not going to admit any such ******* thing when the guy hasn't even taken a handoff or return or pass or snap in PRE SEASON. I mean, ****, I just don't get what kind of truly educated nfl fan could be so bold to come out and declare it given no basis other than 1- the guys build, and 2- his college performance. That's it, that's all you have to go on.

I'm telling you right ******* now, if that was all you needed to go on, and you had your little draft paper into the steelers pegging the top 100 best players pre draft, and you were dead on, 100 percent accurate for a few years, you'd have a job there. No doubt about it, you know it's true. So, why is it then, in everyones top 20 even, there are ALWAYS guys that end up ******** the bed?

Hint, it's because when they hit the NFL, sometimes all those numbers don't mean a ******* thing. To quote our old buddy Herm Edwards "You play to win the game" and if the guy you picked ends up helping you win the game, it doesn't matter where he was drafted.

Unless, of course, you spent 108 pages, saying he should never have been taken, then you might look a little like a ******* douchenozzle.

No reason to add it. He is never going to be a starter in the NFL. If Bell gets hurt then Blount will start. They aren't going to start Archer because they know he can't take the pounding. Even if Bell and Blount both get hurt they will pick up a FA or bring someone off the PS before they start Archer.

The great one has spoken this into FACT. Everybody bow down and worship the all knowing one.LOL

Personally, I don't think the treads would have lasted longer than 3 pages if Archer went to the Browns.

Probably not because everyone would agree it was a bad decision.

Wow ain't we sensitive. You put down everybody that has a different opinion than yours, because what you say is gospel then cry when some one gives it back to you.

it's a "wtf" decision at worst, and I do not know that anyone really, really wanted him.
but that has been said numerous times before.

On a slightly different note, still regarding this thread, evidently the rest of the picks must be ok cause there is not a lot of dissension regarding them. The fact that this one has gone on so long kinda adds some credibility to that since nothing else to ***** about. On a positive note the fact that the discussion has gone on so long at least allows us some foot ball entertainment in the off season. Some guys are very convinced that this kid will bust or get crushed as soon as they start playing with pads on, some believe he will be a fumble machine. Others think he will be the next greatest thing to sliced bread. I know my opinion on the kid has changed since he was drafted from seeing all the posts and clips on here. My initial thoughts were my son was bigger than him in junior high school and this kid will get killed. What were they thinking. After watching a lot of clips I now hope the smurf has enough speed and elusiveness to make us glad he was selected.

I am not going to guarantee anything other than I will be watching the first regular season game to see if he gets in the game and a) does anything note worthy, and b) survives.

Bullshit. If you want to get into a pissing match bring it sweetheart. Not crying about anything. Just sick of the circle jerk click here. You see me write something you don't like so instead of refuting it, you break out the old tired childish "The great one has spoken" ****. You've added nothing to this discussion except childish gibberish.

Pretty sure there has been more he sucks will get broken half WTF were thinking then he is the greatest thing since slice bread.

No, there has been a lot more "You're not working for the Steelers so shut up doo doo head".

I don't care if he ever starts. I don't care if he's not the best. But if he's the difference between us winning and losing and multiple games. This pick is an EPIC win for me.

"doo doo head"???

if I see anyone call someone a "doo doo head" on this board, you can bet I'll report that post.

we have a decorum on this ************ to uphold and base language such as that bullshit will not be tolerated by any of you cum burpers.

you fucktards are still beating this ******* **** into the ground.....get a life you bunch of twatwaffles
