L.A. Times: Day 1 of the Trump impeachment hearing was a lost day for Democrats

Day 1 of the public House impeachment hearings on President Trump is in the books, and nothing that happened will move public opinion in a meaningful way. The folks who have wanted to impeach Trump since he won the presidency still do, and the folks who don’t still don’t.

In other words, it’s a lost day for Democrats.

The burden of proof is on Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B. Schiff (D-Burbank) to do more than secure impeachment, which is all but certain. Their job is to conduct these hearings in a way that moves public opinion to the point that the Senate will convict the president. That means giving Republican senators something that changes their impression of Trump’s conduct of Ukraine foreign policy. What’s alleged may make many members of the GOP uncomfortable, but it doesn’t come remotely close to requiring that the president be removed from office.

The opening-day witnesses — diplomatic officials Bill Taylor and George Kent — testified professionally and with honor, but they failed to deliver a made-for-TV gotcha. Rather, they simply reiterated that they had no firsthand knowledge of the president’s interactions and had not had conversations with the president directly.

“What I can do here for you today is tell you what I heard from people,” Taylor said at one point to the Democratic counsel, which is not exactly compelling evidence if you are trying to convince the American people that what happened is worthy of taking down a presidency.

Here's the problem with that. This isn't a criminal court. This is congress. "High crimes and misdemeanors" are whatever the House of Representatives say they are. They don't have to prove anything. All they have to do is get the court of public opinion on their side. And they have 94% of the media as mouth pieces to do it. I mean look at it. Somebody in congress started using the words bribery and extortion, and it took about 3 minutes for MSM to start parroting the same words. Fortunately, it doesn't end there, and the Senate has a say.

Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 closed at record highs on Wednesday.
The Dow rose 92.10 points, or three-tenths of a percentage point, to 27783.59. The S&P 500 moved up 2.20 points, less than one-tenth of a percentage point. But since those indexes were already at record highs, even the small gains were enough to set new records.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 3.99, or less than one-tenth of a percentage point.

The uptick in stocks came as investors digested two important hearings on Capitol Hill and reports that trade talks with China had hit a snag.

A House panel heard the first public testimony from witnesses in the Democrats’ impeach inquiry. Many of President Donald Trump’s supporters thought the hearing went poorly for the president’s accusers. Privately, many Democrats agree. Fed chair Jerome Powell testified to the Joint Economic Committee, expressing optimism about the economy and telling lawmakers that interest rates were on hold unless something big changed. The Fed has been trying to communicate a message of certainty and stability to counter uncertainty created by impeachment, trade, and the coming election year.
