The Coronavirus thread

My son had a extra week of spring break added and online classes till April 3rd at the University of South Carolina.

60 plus is a number

Age - the first thing the death panel Dr will look at on your chart

Italy announces all shops except pharmacies and food outlets will be CLOSED as coronavirus death toll climbs by 31% to 827 in 24hrs
and intensive care units are advised to stop treating the elderly

A top Italian doctor said intensive care wards should place an age limit on beds as a way of prioritising medical resources amid the deepening crisis that has seen cases in Italy rise by 196 to 827 today.

I went on a ski trip with about 5 old college friends about 4 years ago and 4 of the 6 (including me) developed a wicked bad cough, weakness, joint pain and a high fever. I was in bed for about a week but two others had to get chest X-rays, steroids, antibiotics, etc. I wonder if that was some sort of coronavirus. It was definitely the worst flu/cold I'd ever had and it hit almost everyone in our party.

All the fun of the Coronavirus, but none of the accolades.

I got sick about a month ago, right out of the blue, and it was probably the sickest I'd ever been in a 72 hour period in my life (fever of 104+ & all the other symptoms of a flu), anyways, it was the Influenza B strain and it was apparently running rampant in my area and I didn't know about it.

Anyways, I guess my point is is that viruses can be nasty but just be practical, stay hydrated and take plenty of vitamin C. Linus Pauling is one of two people in the world who has won 2 Nobel prizes in different areas of study, and he was the first and biggest proponent of vitamin C therapy in the western world. People claim megadose vitamin C therapy (like 200k plus a day intravenously) can kill cancer cells within months, without the side effects of chemotherapy.

It's not a big money maker like other pharmaceuticals though, so you don't hear much about it unfortunately. It's really a sad thing.

Socialized medicine always becomes rationed medicine.

How is this worse than standard flu again?

Capitol Hill gets the sweats

Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) staffer tests positive for coronavirus

Not eliminating the Pandemic Response and Global Health Security Team in 2018 seems like good idea right about now.

"I'm from the Government and I'm here to help." You all are still looking to the Government, who can't fix public transportation (Amtrak), run a postal service without it being perpetually bankrupt, or fix healthcare....to fix Coronavirus.

Got it. Government IS your religion. Despite it's never-ending failures and lack of successes.

I said awhile back it would take someone famous to get infected for people to take notice

Toot toot

You're all about your self predictions. Liz Warren. Got it.

I'm still confused by that one.

I told my wife. I'm less concerned about COVID than I am about supplies. I live in the DC metro area. 1-2" of snow forecast, people **** their pants, raid stores and you can't get bread, milk, TP, etc. It's not that the snow is bad. You can't get supplies because everyone goes bezer thinking armageddon is here.

I went to Sams today because of this phenomenon (I guess I contribute to it then) to get some staples (only $500 worth).

This is where toilet paper and paper towels used to be stacked. Pallets beyond belief. Thousands and thousands of quantities. Gone. Literally Gone.

This is where rice used to be. Basamati, Uncle Bens, every flavor under the sun. Pallets of it. Gone.

This was the cooking oils section. Canola oil? No thanks, no canola for you.

Pharma area with alcohol, Vitamin C etc:

I took a dozen more I'm not posting.

I'm more afraid of people's reactions to this situation than I am the situation. So...buy toilet paper.

How is this worse than standard flu again?

It spreads twice as easily and you're ten times more likely to die from it.

Unbelievable, Tim.

How is this worse than standard flu again?

It's not the flu

Scientists reveal the deadly illness kills off lung cells and can cause the immune system to go 'haywire'

The virus infects cells in the lungs and can kill them off and trigger pneumonia

The virus can also send the immune system into overdrive as it tries to fight off infection, triggering swelling which can lead to more breathing difficulties.

If a severe infection takes hold it may move on to cause damage or dysfunction to the stomach, intestines, heart, liver and kidneys, and even provoke organ failure.

NASCAR announces event operational changes due to coronavirus fears

NASCAR officials say they remains in daily consultation with public health officials and other prominent sports and entertainment properties as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation develops nationally and across local markets where they race.

Track Services meeting held in open air locations across all series.
NASCAR recommends that access to team haulers be restricted to necessary personnel at team’s discretion.
Driver appearances should be structured to ensure that drivers are visible to fans in an open-air setting, such as Q&A sessions.
Drivers should pre-sign items whenever possible, carry their own Sharpie and hero cards should be the primary form for all autographs.
Pre-race and post-race activities (driver introductions, grid & victory lane). We will provide a 6-foot buffer around the grid and driver introduction stage.
All advance appearances will be replaced with remote media activities and/or rescheduled for a later date in coordination with racetracks.
All individuals coming to the infield care center demonstrating symptoms potentially consistent with coronavirus will be appropriately handled by medical professionals. All facilities have been provided a standard operating process following CDC guidelines.
“The health, safety and well-being of our industry, employees, media, fans and everyone associated with our events remains our top priority. We will remain diligent as we actively monitor this situation with medical experts and health officials. We will keep everyone informed as to any additional prospective operational or scheduling changes,” a NASCAR press release read.

It's still really early to be determining a genuine mortality and infection rate for this virus. The infection rate does seem to be fairly severe though.

Influenza in the west has been around at least a hundred years so there's so much more we know about it, vaccines etc. Not sure it's really fair to compare the flu to this virus in either a negative or positive light. Much more needs to be discovered about this IMO.

Wow, Don Lemon is a POS. He's rolling his eyes and completely dismissing Kasich because he didn't have anything negative to say about the President's address tonight:
