The denominator, i.e., the number of people with the virus, is affected VASTLY by the failure to test asymptomatic patients. This number currently has nothing to do with "estimates," but instead on the number of tested and confirmed cases. That number is probably half as large as it should be given the vast number of asymptomatic people, including a huge number under age 21. That age group has a huge number of asymptomatic people.

Follow along. I projected 4,800 - 5,100 deaths based on 300,000 Covid cases using the current ratio. If cases are underreported, it changes the ratio, it does not change the projected deaths as both the 300,000 and the 26.7 million are.... underreported.

By your theory infections should have been kept at a much lower level there than say in Florida, where most people walk around without masks and restaurants and bars have been open for months. Yet the opposite happened.

I can explain the reasoning behind restrictions and masks. It’s based on what has been KNOWN about contagious diseases for well over a century. Highest risk to get the virus or to die from it? I’m not so sure that prioritizing who is eligible for the vaccine and when hasn’t been counterproductive to the goal of herd immunity. Even if you assume that the number of actual cases is double the confirmed cases, probably only around 20% have immunity.

California has 25 times the population density of South Dakota and a case rate that is 30% lower despite the Los Angeles outbreak. I can explain that. How do you explain Florida? You cannot. The case rate for the entire USA is 8.29% (Totals Cases/Total Population).

Also, you assume that mask mandates, social distancing and restrictions are absolute. Everyone adheres to them and in states where there aren’t any, or less of them, nobody does. My in-laws live in Florida and they wear masks and avoid social gatherings and they’re Trumptards too! My father-in-law is a 78 year-old cancer survivor, he is rightfully concerned about Covid. He’s not alone in that regard in snow bird country.
