Leading up to the 2022 NFL Draft starting on April 28th, we will be releasing several draft profiles of prospects who could potentially see themselves on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Next up…

Kenyon Green (Guard), Texas A&M, Junior

Green weighs in at 325lbs, stands 6’4″ tall, and is one of the most complete prospects in this draft regardless of position.

Overview:

Kenyon Green
is a former 5-star recruit out of Texas who most viewed as either an elite offensive tackle or guard coming out of high school. He went into Texas A&M and became an immediate starter as a true freshman, which is very tough to do. He became a three year starter and quickly became a house hold name in the scouting community. He has made starts at every position along the offensive line besides center, and honestly looked at home at every one of them. Green also started two years next to Steelers OT Dan Moore Jr. in 2019 and 2020 on the left side of A&M’s offensive line.

Pros:

  • Great build and size
  • Some of the best leg strength and drive in the class
  • Strong punch in pass protection
  • Explosive off the line of scrimmage
  • Plays with great pad level, starts his stance lower than most
  • Strongest run blocker in the class
  • Doesn’t rush himself working up to linebackers
  • Good athleticism for his size
  • Position flexibility
  • Rarely gets pushed back in pass protection on the inside
  • Strong anchor
  • Hand placement is very good

Cons:

  • Struggled more at tackle than at guard
  • Athletic edge defenders gave him some problems
  • Mirror could be better
  • Has been late picking up stunts at times
  • Occasionally elects to grab instead of recovering resulting in penalties
  • Has had his hand get too wide in pass protection when beat off the snap

The Steelers definitely need help at multiple positions on the offensive line this offseason. Green is someone who could easily come in and play day 1 without issue at either guard spot, as well as fill in at tackle if needed.

Hand Technique and Footwork:

I wouldn’t call Green a true technician, but he has very little concerns when it comes to his hands and feet. He has some of the quickest feet in the class and once he has them set you are not moving him. He gets out of his stance very quickly which gives him an advantage over the defender, and almost never gets his feet too far out from under him allowing him to have power in his strikes at all times. His hand fighting is also very good, as he consistently is able to counter the defenders hands with ease. His initial punches stun defenders as he fires both hands quickly before defenders can react. His lone weakness is on occasion reaching outside a defenders frame if he sense he is in trouble, but more of that happened at tackle than on the interior.

Mobility:

Green is a good athlete for his size and that was proven by his abiity to fill in at both tackle spots throughout his career. But on the interior he shows that he has very good lateral mobility in the run game regardless of scheme. He has experience both as a puller and while operating on outside zone plays, which both of those he was able to get to his marks without issue. He also is able to get to the second level and cut off linebackers at an impressive rate for someone his size, as he has a good understanding of pairing his mobility with his path to do so.

Power and Strength:

This is most likely the strongest area of Green’s game and that is saying something because he does a lot well. There likely isn’t a stronger drive blocker in this draft class than Green as he rarely isn’t able to get at least a couple yards of movement when moving forward. He has strength all throughout his frame from his legs to his punches. His anchor strength is also phenomenal in pass protection as once he is set he doesn’t get knocked off balance or pushed back. There isn’t much more to say about this, he is just a strong and powerful individual.

Football IQ:

Even as a young player (only 20 years old currently) Green has as much starting experience as almost anyone in the draft and across the entire offensive line. He has shown little issue understanding his assignment or getting confused no natter which position he has played along the offensive line, which shows he has a good understanding of the playbook. He has occasionally shown issues with identifying stunts along the defensive line in pass protection, but that is a minor concern as it only showed up in a handful of games.

NFL Comparison – David DeCastro:

This is going to be music to SteelerNation’s ears hearing that a comparison for Green is former Steelers’ All-Pro guard David DeCastro. Both players are absolute dominate players in the run game and consistently created movement no matter who was in front of them. Both possess good athleticism for being their size and operate very good in space. Both had slight questions coming out about their ability with speed rushers, but is a mild concern for them.

Draft Projection – 1st Round Pick:

It is hard to gauge where Green will fall in the upcoming draft, simply because interior offensive lineman can be dropped down draft boards simply due to position. Green is a top 15 talent in the draft and is a week 1 starter, so I wouldn’t expect him to fall far. But it has been seen on several occasions where interior lineman fall into the back half of the first round who should’ve been taken higher.

Unless the team addresses the position in FA with a true top talent then he's definitely in my radar just behind the OTs, Davis and the top 3 CBs
