Solar Power Plants Are Literally Roasting Birds In-Flight

There is growing evidence that birds flying in the vicinity of a solar thermal power project in California’s Mojave Desert are being injured and even killed either by the solar heat that’s focused with mirrors on its three energy-collecting towers, or by colliding with the mirrors themselves.

ivanpah-solar-power-plant-537x369.jpg

Yet a task force set up to investigate the problem at the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System (ISEGS) has brushed aside several recommendations by the forensics laboratory of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), according to the minutes of a meeting on the subject obtained by the Los Angeles public television station KCET...

ISEGS is a solar thermal power generator that uses arrays of mirrors, called heliostats, that reflect and narrowly focus solar heat to “power towers” filled with water. The focused solar heat reaches a temperature of 800 degrees Fahrenheit, boiling the towers’ water to generate electricity.

Dead and injured birds have been found at the plant site, having been burned, evidently by the reflected solar heat, or with other injuries because they evidently failed to recognize the mirrored heliostats as solid surfaces, much the same way that birds crash into windows.

Al gore has a great piece in the current Rolling Stone about the great wonders of Solar... basically with a lot of govt subsidies, solar power is almost cheap enough to compete with traditional power sources... and the world is in horrid shape if we don't turn off all the poor peop;les power... oh wait no we just need heavily taxed carbon and expensive power that only rich guys like him can afford... follow Germany's lead... blah blah blah... its expensive and unreliable right now... until there is a way to store it for on demand use, its a novelty feel good source... yes it can be used to supplement the grid, and on great days may provide a good amount of the power, but on bad days its useless and while the startup is getting cheaper, the long term cost for m aintaining it is not a viable option yet...

Wind farms can kill eagles without penalty

Under pressure from the wind-power industry, the Obama administration said Friday it will allow companies to kill or injure eagles without the fear of prosecution for up to three decades.

The new rule is designed to address environmental consequences that stand in the way of the nation's wind energy rush: the dozens of bald and golden eagles being killed each year by the giant, spinning blades of wind turbines.

Jesus H Christ, where are all the rainbow-color-wearing Liberals who screamed about the white spotted owl, and preserving the pink speckled frog, and are diverting water in California into the ocean to save the pear-crusted snuffle-snuffer??? For the love of Christ, Liberals, birds are ******* dying here!

According to science 99.9% of all species that have walked this earth have gone extinct, yet we can utterly ruin the lives of thousands of people, sometimes tens of thousands, over one species... unless of course, it is an industry or group that is politically appropriate for the party in charge...

I will note that I have been to a few Coal plants and at least one gas plant where they kill dozens of migratory birds every start up because they seem to like to nest in the crevices that get hot and gassy, and wind turbines are notorious for killing bats and birds so its not like that is exclusive to solar...

Hell, I bet a ton more birds and other animals die just from running into buildings or getting hit by cars, but there's no one screaming about that.

The intentions are good and that is the only thing that matters for liberal ideas.

Maybe we can move these things to the border. Seems like it would make a pretty good border fence instead of what we currently have.
