Aldon Smith has used up his last chance.

Smith, the talented but troubled 49ers pass rusher who was arrested overnight for DUI, has been released.

There was little doubt that had to happen: The 49ers have given second and third chances to Smith and he has repeatedly made them regret it, and at some point they simply had to say enough is enough.

“This organization has tried very hard to help Aldon fight his issues,” the team said in a statement. “Although he is no longer a member of this team, our support and concern for him will continue.”

In his only season as a full-time starter, in 2012, Smith was a sensational player, finishing the season with 19.5 sacks. But in 2013 he missed five games while in alcohol rehab, and in 2014 he missed nine games because of an NFL suspension. Now his 49ers career is over, and his NFL future is in doubt.

He wasn't used right in SF. They weren't willing to give him the support system a guy like him deserves. We SHOULD sign him ... as a beer vendor. His intimate knowledge of various brews would do wonders for home attendance and the front office (concession) would be happy to make sure he received all the support he needs in the form of money to make change.

On a serious note ... How has this guy not gone to jail/prison yet?

a change of scenery would do him good

bwahahahahahahahahhahaha

he should modify his name

Wow. Drafted 7th overall and out of the league in 4 years.

He'll make a great Bengal or cowboy

Addiction is tough to beat. Even if it is self inflicted. I sure hope the initial post was in jest.

I'd at least talk to him, what could that hurt. Have James Harrison with yaqz though...................

Salute the nation

Back in the day it was fun to talk about signing guys like this (not that I ever wanted these knuckleheads)

Now Goodell will suspend him for a year.

what a waste of talent. This would be the only way we would ever have a chance on him. The Rooneys would not touch him with Jerry Jones' wrinkled dick, though.

Fixed because I have my hopes up that Goodell's time as commissioner is being brought to an end as his bumbling, stumbling is being brought to light.

yeah, he wasn´t a talent bust. The guy could have been really good, total waste

The games I watched of him during their SB appearance, he was great. I couldn't believe how good their defense was and he stood out to me. For his own good and safety, I hope he gets under control. He's too young and talented to throw it all away.

Some folks seem to be unable to beat the addiction, drugs, alcohol, gambling, what ever. I have known some folks that just have a predisposition for some self destructive behavior like this. In some cases it hits gifted athletes in others I have seen it hit folks that are actually genius IQs and they are fantastically gifted mentally, until they begin drinking. It is a wasted human being regardless of what their talents are. In the case of someone like the pro athlete they have essentially won the lottery and have now lost the ticket.
