Art bought the team but didn’t know **** on how to run it, other than the business side and try to make money. Until he hired Chuck Noll, this team literally sucked on a win / loss statement.

Art’s family dynamics kept this team in operation and it worked. That family first, has helped all along the way.

It was said once, by a great man “How could you not like Art Rooney”

It still amazes me every time I think about how the Chief bought the team for $2500. and now it is worth Billions. truly an incredible investment
Yep and he paid it from winnings he got from betting on the ponies.

Well to be honest Drink he tried for 30 years, until he finally gave the reins over to Dan. It was he who hired Noll and started the franchise as it became to be known for. The Chief, though knew everyone and EVERY owner/executive dating back to when the league began. He also was a philanthropist to anyone in need, especially kids. I had an uncle who used to always tell me The Chief had no enemies in the league office or club owners. But he put up with a lot of ****** ones (G.P. Marshall being the worst).

Dan Rooney My 75 years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL is a good read.
A quote from the book regarding that long standing rumor.
"Let me say right here, there's been a lot of talk over the years about how Dad came to buy the franchise. It's been rumored that a big $250,000 payday at Saratoga enabled him to purchase the team. That's nonsense. Dad's legendary day at the racetrack occurred in the summer of 1937, a memorable day at Saratoga. ....... It was a fateful day alright- the biggest payday Dad ever had at the racetrack- but it had nothing to do with buying the team."

George Washington made a salary of $25,000 a year, which is $843,000 in today's dollars making Washington the wealthiest person in America at that time.

The poor sucker who he bought it from. I bet not a day goes by when the thought of "it could have been us" enters the mind of at least one of his descendants.

$2500 was $51,000 in 1937.
