It would make sense from a cap standpoint and give huge signing bonus. They could even sign him for more years than they expect him to play, so they can spread the signing bonus.
For instance give him a 1 million 2019 salary, 40 million signing bonus on a 5 year contract. 2019 cap hit would only be 9 million, yet Ben gets paid 41 mil.

No way the Steelers are going to essentially guarantee a full 5 year contract for a QB at the end of his career.

He already has a 5 million dollar roster bonus they paid and a 6.2 million dollar cap charge for his original bonus. They could get his number down some, but nowhere near 9m.

How are they guaranteeing a full contract. His market value is 30 mil per year. If they give him a 30 or 40 mil signing bonus, they are only guaranteeing 1 year plus.

The going rate for a top QB is 30+ million per. You have to imagine Ben's signing bonus will be for a years salary as the Steelers typically do. So, he will get $30+ million when he signs this new deal and I can definitely see it being for 4 or 5 years with the expectation he only plays 3 years of it. I don't see Ben giving any real home town discount. He may not demand to be the highest paid but my guess is he will be top 5 paid.

Current 12m salary, 5m bonus, 6.2 proration-23.2m hit

Expectation add 3 years and 90m, total of 4 years,
107M(counting 17m from this year)

2019- 40 million bonus(folding in 5 mil roster bonus previously paid) 3 million salary - Cap hit of 19.2m, savings of 4 million.

2020- 23m in salary/roster bonus, mostly all guaranteed, hit of 33m
2021-24m s/rb, hit of 34 mil
2022-20m a bonus, hit of 30, likely will retire triggering a 10m dead cap charge

Steelers agree not to go after Ben's remaining 10M in proration if he retires after 2021

Effective new deal of 3 years/87m, total deal of 4/107, 67m in first two years.

The Steelers don't use the salary cap properly.

Likely Ben and Steelers already have agreement on roster bonus as new contract is finalized. Most likely ends up as part of signing bonus.

Would anyone be surprised if Ben wants a full contract not restructure after all the finger pointing at him this year, He led the league in passing yet he has been criticizes by fans, talk shows and some un worthy players.

If they could get a couple trucks of TB12 juice and re-label it, then paid the proceeds to BEN in cash, he'd be a hell of a lot less costly..........

Salute the nation

Some of the talking heads were talking about if Ben should be the highest paid QB. Not sure what really brought that on but I sure hope that isn't the reason Ben hasn't signed a contract extension yet. If he wants to be the highest paid QB in the league, we may have a problem. That would put him at $35+ million per. Can't recall the exact number but I know ridiculous money has been tossed around the passed couple years. He'd be worth that a few years ago but at his age, when his arm could go any year, even this coming year, that is a bit too risky.

Ben really isn't showing any signs of slowing down yet, and the ONLY other QB I would even consider replacing Ben with already has a job. I think his name is Mahomes and he works in Kansas City.
