Brain dead?

And I thought this was going to be another Nancy Pelosi thread.

It's amazing how little we understand about the workings of our brains. I don't know what to think about this poor girl.

“It shows she can rapidly respond to a command … it’s not a fluke,”

Sure, if 45 seconds later is what you consider "rapid" response.

I'm extremely skeptical based just on these videos. It would be easy to portray this as "response" if you can recognize periods of involuntary motion, start the camera and start saying, "go ahead and move." Then an involuntary twitch looks like she's moving in response to the command. In the first video, the second time she moves her hand, they tell her, "move it more," but all she really does is let go of the object that was in her grip. That could just be a spasm.

I suppose they're entitled to keep their daughter alive like this as long as they can pay for it, but I think it's cruel and selfish to keep someone in that state. Some might argue that we don't know if she might make a full recovery, but others would argue that we also don't know if she's in agony.

Q: Why would the hospital have any right to order that the patient be removed from life support if the family protests that decision?

A: Because the medical care is financed by the government, so the government - in the form of a judge - can pull the plug.

But hey, no worries, I am sure that 21Steelers will be here momentarily to explain why giving control of medical care and medical decisions to the government could never go wrong. They are here to help us, right? Other than when they want to kill us, I mean.
