Anyone remember back in the day when the Super Bowl champs played the college all-stars?

What better way to evaluate top college draft prospects then to have them play against the best of the best?!
Plus it would be more fun to watch than the stupid All-Star game.

This tradition ended in 1976 with our beloved Steelers playing in the final matchup.

On July 23, 1976, the Super Bowl champion Steelers played what would become the last College All-Star Game. A horrific thunderstorm broke out in the third quarter, and video of the game has to be seen to be believed: Not only was the storm like something out of a disaster movie, but when the college team’s coach, Ara Parseghian called a timeout to try to get his players organized in the monsoon, the fans took the opportunity to storm the field. Eventually the game was called off in the third quarter, both because of lightning and because those fans on the field had torn down the goal posts and showed no signs of being willing to vacate. The Steelers led 24-0 at the time the game was called.

I remember watching this. I thought it was cool, and my dad was disgusted

I have a feeling I'm going to get laughed out of the room? lol

NOT laughing at all but neither side would show up due to chance of injury and the pay would be to little.

VERY late in the off season for college and NFL players are tired and need a break before starting their PRO year all over again.

It would always be a blow out in this day and age. No matter how bad the worst NFL team is they would beat even the best college tea out there yet alone a group of allstars who haven't worked together on a generic offense and defensive scheme.

I like the concept, but I'm not sure if I could watch another two-hand touch all-star game of grown men playing patty-cake, where the offenses start with the ball on the opponents' 25 half the time. What a farce that Pro Bowl was.

All that happened in an era when players made good money but not this kinda money. Signing a starters contract in the NFL is a life changing event. In fact in that era the NFL was still better than the CFL but the salary gap was not that big. You have a significant amount if the best players not willing to play their last bowl game. Not happening.

The current All-Star game also has a risk of injury, but they still show up.

I don't quite understand what yur saying because being VERY late in the offseason you would presume they are rested.
Regardless, since no one likes the current All-Star game, my great idea would be to replace the current All-Star game with this one!

No doubt it would be a blowout. I'd bet most were. But I think the entertainment value here would be watching how future pro football players fare against the best of the best, rather than rooting for a team to win. It's more about rooting for a player to do well imo.
I'd bet a game like this would draw lots of interest. The first year anyway.

Neither side has nothing to gain and much to lose. Your idea is a valiant one but highly unlikely to happen. The elite college players don't even show up for their BOWL games yet alone this high-risk low reward proposal.

As for late in the off season, think about it, the SB winners are tired, the college kids have been on break and have to come back in to get game ready ???

Our current Pro bowl is a joke, and this would just add to it.

It was stopped for a reason and back then money was small, imagine today's salary NFL players being forced to come in for peanuts to risk their high earning potential for a shot of out of shape kids to display their less than rookie talent.

SORRY Stewey, just not on board.
