Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders among 2010 draft class standouts

By Scott Brown | November 26, 2014 9:00:09 AM PST
PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin spent part of the bye week looking at trends across the NFL.

One thing that couldn’t have escaped the panoramic view he took of the league is how this has been the year of the rookie wide receiver.

Brown
From Odell Beckham Jr.'s amazing one-handed catch to Kelvin Benjamin’s eight touchdown grabs in 11 games, rookie wideouts are making an impact across the league, and that includes one of Tomlin’s own players.

Wide receiver Martavis Bryant already has six touchdown catches even though the fourth-round draft pick didn’t dress until the Steelers’ seventh game of the season.

As much acclaim as the rookie wide receivers have generated this has really been the year of the Class of 2010 wide receivers.

Consider that an incredible five players in the NFL’s top 10 in receiving yards were drafted in 2010, including the two leaders, Denver’s Demaryius Thomas and the Steelers' Antonio Brown.

The Steelers, in fact, drafted two of the wide receivers who are in the top 10 for receiving yards, getting Emmanuel Sanders in the third round and Brown in the sixth round in 2010.

Sanders has had a breakout season after joining the Broncos as a free agent, already establishing career highs in catches (76), receiving yards (1,079) and touchdown receptions (eight).

No one is happier for Sanders, who never quite panned out in Pittsburgh, than Brown.

“I’m excited for him and it’s great to see him doing well,” said Brown, who still keeps in touch with Sanders. “He’s doing a really good job and it’s always great when you’re on the winning side of things and playing with Peyton Manning.”

Sanders has thrived while catching passes from Manning and he also stayed relatively healthy. As a result, the two wide receivers who grew up together in Pittsburgh could meet again at the Pro Bowl.

Brown smiled when that possibility was posed to him earlier this week.

The fact that he and Sanders are both in the top four in the NFL in catches and receiving yards makes it seem a long time ago that the two often battled for one game day roster spot.

That happened in 2010 when Tomlin often pitted the two in competition with one another and framed it as “two dogs for one bone.”

“I think it just encouraged two rookies when they came into the league to stay hungry and always better themselves,” Brown said.

They have done just that.

In the process, Brown and Sanders have shown that while the rookie wide receivers have more than lived up to the hype, it is another group of wideouts that is reigning supreme right now, with Detroit’s Golden Tate and Dallas’ Dez Bryant also excelling from the Class of 2010.

Hopefully Wheaton and Bryant can keep up our luck in picking WRs. Still have high hopes for Wheaton this is almost like his rookie year. Bryant is going to be awesome. Get a little more dog in him when the ball is in the air. They are also high on Goodwin the guy Mel Blount recommended. Good size speed specimen.

Anyone think Tomlins experience as a receiver helps with our recent success in drafting that position?

I wish his experience as a DB Coach would help start a positive trend at those positions. Just saying.

Ant, you know I'm not knocking the pass rankings. There's more that goes into those rankings than DB play however. Passes defensed and intercepted by LBs and DL come to mind. And our defense relies heavily on those positions dropping into coverage. I'm not sure, but I think tipped/batted balls (a keisel specialty) would also factor into the rankings. As do errant throws (not throwaways).

In the defensive backfield, other than Ike, who have we developed into a passable starter at the CB position? You could make the point for Gay and I wouldn't disagree much. Keenan Lewis, but he's no longer here. Cortez Allen is a basket case right now. I hope he gets it turned around because he has the talent to excel. I'd just like to see them develop a CB or two that they've drafted and see those players stay with the Steelers and contribute at an above average level.

As far as Safeties, Troy is on the decline. He's still the best we have and one of the better Safeties in the league. But, he wasn't developed under Tomlin's watch. When both Troy and Shamarko are healthy, Shamarko can't even get on the field to spell an aging Troy. There's something a little telling in that (I hope I'm wrong). Clark when he was here was a big part of the pass rankings during the years cited. He was a free agent and not a homegrown product. To replace Clark, they brought in Mitchell as a free agent. So far, he sucks - although I remember it taking Clark most of a year for things to start clicking.

My opinion is that they have failed to acquire and develop talent in the defensive backfield. I'm not presenting it as a "scathing indictment", just an observation.

I was just presenting that we have had some good years against the pass. You're right we havent hit like we have at WR. Even though Gay has been steady. Sharmarko is my biggest wow. Thought he would of been pressing for a spot by now. Allen i dont know what to rhjnk. I think with him its confidence. Lose that as CB and its over. He has to get it back and sitting the bench isnt helping im sure.

no ****! you'd think with his experience and Carnell as a coach we'd have some lockdown DBs.

Actually the DB's have been a **** ton better since Carnell And His Knee got here. /damning with faint praise.

They do seem to do pretty well drafting RB's and WR's. Everything else is kinda dubious however.

I saw Revis, & Talib, go to good teams.

Steelers brought in well a corner who wasn't rated nowhere as high.

The club hasn't really address the position (DB) thru the draft or free agency.

Aggressively that is....

Lake has a ok but not star in Gay, a ok but struggling corner in Cortez, a aging player in Ike.

Not like the man is stocked with viable options.

He is polishing the turds, and along with a mediocre pass rush, that is a recipe for problems. Which is why the group is rated in the middle of the NFL pack.

Low on talent.

GM needs to bring in better options one way or another.

At corner, and at OLber.......................

This. Worilds and Ike are most likely gone next year. They need to draft and sign one or more of each. It's really hard to believe they pissed away two 1st round picks on 3-4 DEs while ignoring CB.

The issued I had was that Hood was a 4-3 DE not a 3-4 DE. Just like Timmons was a 4-3 LB not a 3-4 OLB. Then they draft Sylvester, Shazier, Davis, and Spence who are all mack ILBs while they have Williams as the only true buck on the team. I liked the Shazier pick but how many more mack ILBs do you need?

I would not call Heyward a waste, he is not JJ Watts but neither is he hot garbage. During the drafts that Heyward and Hood were taken what corners were available at our pick that were a good value and worthy of a pick at the end of the first round?

And hindsight is fine at this point as we are looking at what ifs here and nothing more. Also what three four ends would you take as we were looking for replacements for Kiesel and Smith at that time.

Looking back at the 2009 draft, really not many impressive names selected in the second round after the Steelers took Hood. http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?season=2009

As for 2011, guys like Derek Sherrod, Ras-I Dowling and Aaron Williams were all discussed as possible first-round picks.http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?season=2011

the last 2 superbowls we won Ike taylor and McFadden and ike taylor and deshea where our starting cbs. I don't think we need lock down cbs as much as we need pass rushers. I would rather them focus on great pass rushers than cbs

Same here, which is one reason that Jarvis Jones really needs to pan out. When you invest in one of the elite positions on the field, you need return on that investment or you are set back 3-4 years at the position.
