On Friday, the Cleveland Browns decided to throw their name in the arms race that was primarily happening in the AFC West and trade for Houston Texans quarterback, Deshaun Watson. It was reported that the Browns were OUT of the Watson sweepstakes and the decision was down to the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints. The bombshell news that the Browns were the winners sent shockwaves through the NFL landscape, with many taking to social media to react. Even Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro DT Cam Heyward gave his thoughts, a message that Head Coach Mike Tomlin will probably echo to his team all offseason:
Odds makers previously had the Steelers with the worst odds to win the AFC North (+650 at Fanduel Sportsbook), but the odds have gotten worse since the news of Waston’s arrival in the AFC North (+950). This is due to the seemingly perfect moves and news from the other teams the Steelers will be tasked with facing twice a year.
The Browns not only added Watson, but traded for wide receiver, Amari Cooper. The Cincinnati Bengals gave out $53 million dollars worth of contracts to offensive linemen, their glaring weakness from this past season as Joe Burrow was sacked 19 times during the playoffs. They might not be done adding to that group as they are reportedly eyeing free agent right tackle, La’el Collins. The Baltimore Ravens signed big time safety Marcus Williams to a lucrative contract and right tackle Morgan Moses. While they are influential moves, nothing is going to be bigger than the return of a healthy Lamar Jackson, who missed the last four weeks of the 2021 regular season.
Things are definitely heating up in the kitchen in the AFC North, but Heyward and the Steelers are sneakily a team to keep an eye on. They have made additions on the offensive line in James Daniels and Mason Cole to help improve one of the worst groups in the NFL. They are two players known for their success as run blockers, another signal that the Steelers are truly dedicated to establishing their running identity again.
The defense has a great opportunity to regain their elite status they had in the two seasons prior to 2021, not only because of free agent additions Myles Jack and Levi Wallace, but their run defense will bring back two key pieces in Tyson Alualu and Stephon Tuitt (assuming he does return).
Do not count out Tomlin and the Steelers this year, #SteelerNation.
