The Pittsburgh Steelers started off the 2022 NFL Draft by selecting the first quarterback taken off the board in Kenny Pickett with the 20th overall pick. Pickett, who comes from being the leader right in the Steelers’ backyard playing for the University of Pittsburgh, is coming off of his best season yet as a collegiate quarterback. He led Pitt to an ACC Championship, and was a finalist for the 2022 Heisman Trophy Award. Pickett certainly developed quite the resume while under center, one that caught the Steelers’ attention enough to make him the first overall quarterback selected.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin had stated before that the Steelers “ended up with the guy next door” as far as their quarterback search went, and that in itself is not something to take for granted. The Steelers organization was able to get an up close and personal grasp on Pickett’s personal development throughout college and obviously felt comfortable enough with not only what they saw on the field, but off the field as well that garnered them to draft Pickett in the first round, with the hopes of him being the future of the franchise.

Pickett, along with Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky, now gives the Steelers coaching staff three viable options at the quarterback position who all hope to become the team’s future at the quarterback position. The organization and most of its players find themselves in an interesting situation this upcoming season, one they have not been in for about 18 years. Many within all of Steeler Nation have only been used to seeing one quarterback consistently be under center, and that was future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. That being said, defensive captain and 11-year Steelers veteran, Cam Heyward (who has been vocal about the Steelers addressing the QB position this off-season) shared his optimism on The Jim Rome Show regarding the Steelers selecting Pickett, sharing what he saw personally each day.

“Man I’m excited.” Heyward said. “I’ve gotten to watch Kenny these past couple of years and haven’t gotten the chance to really interact with him. But I can see the type of leader he is.”

“He’s got some wheels. He hits people with the fake slide. I don’t know if you want to keep doing that at the next level, but he’s got a great arm and is a good kid. We’ve got to embrace him and put him into the Steeler life.”

It has been reported that Pickett’s new locker will be right beside Heyward’s as he enters his first year in the black and gold and Coach Tomlin has been vocal about how the Steelers first round selection in 2022 will have his fair chance to get a crack at being the starting quarterback for the upcoming season, even without any previous NFL experience. Throughout the draft process, all the NFL media was reporting was that Pickett is the most “NFL ready” quarterback prospect available and Pickett will get his chance to prove them right. Although there is an immense amount of pressure for the rookie to succeed early, who is to say that he won’t produce so quickly?
