The Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert met with reporters on Monday morning. The biggest topic was obviously the hole left at quarterback by the recently retired Ben Roethlisberger.

Colbert had this to say about who the quarterback would be if they had to play a game today.

If we started a season today, Mason would be our starter. He’s 5-4-1 as a starter. We’re excited to see what’s next for Mason.”

Obviously there isn’t many Steelers fans who love to hear that. Many believe they know what Rudolph brings to the table, and it’s not much. Colbert would go on to say that they will take four quarterbacks to camp in the fall.

“We know we’re going to add to the position. I can’t tell you how at this point. We will go to camp with four. If we had start today with Mason as our starter, let’s go. We’ll try to build the best team around him.”

Now does any of this mean that the Steelers won’t go out and try to add to the position via any means possible. No. And Colbert touched on that subject too.

“Can we add to that process from the outside? Yes. We always look at trades, we always look at unrestricted groups, potential cuts down the road. We know we’re going to add to the position.”

The Steelers will begin their free agent meetings tomorrow. That mean’s they will sit down as an organization, and begin to look at the potential free agents across the NFL. They will also see how their own free agents fit into that equation.

Thank God the season doesn't start today.

Mason “knows the system “. Remember how much Colbert and Tomlin love (current) players who “know the system “. If Tom Br*dy showed up on their doorstep today saying he’d like to play another year they’d probably still start Mason the first game or two because he “knows the system”.

Yep knowing that system he still is a 13 point a game QB, wonder what he would be if he didn't know the system. ****.

Given the 2.5 guys on the roster, this is absolutely not news.

I would still roll with him, and any CHEAP options that become available. Spending all your money on a QB without fixing the lines is just wasting money and kicking the can down the road.

Im firmly in the give Mason a chance unless something great falls to us boat. I dont want to overcommit to a qb that isnt a long term fix at the cost of solidifying the OLine or making sure the plan for our outside CB position isnt just hoping Bobby Layne and Pierre are ready to take on big time wrs

So 8-8-1 is the ceiling eh?
Gonna have to find a way to win 13-10 more frequently tho to get those 8 wins

Colbert said they will go to training camp with 4 QBs. So we can lock in them bringing in one in free agency IMO. Perhaps they will draft a QB too. But I am thinking there it is either a late round pick or an after the draft leftover.

Never a losing season. Greatest coach ever.

Brian Flores and Mike Tomlin, apparently the two greatest defensive minds to ever grace the game according to some, should be able to hold teams to 10 or less with regularity. Rudolph should be more than adequate.

This is the reality. who didn't see it coming? He is a stop-gap QB, or will surprise some.

If I was the GM, I'd also say that the only QB currently on the 2022 roster is the starter too.

Haskins is going to be given the original round RFA tag. Colbert said that too.

TC will figure out who is better.

flash back to a press conference 2004. somewhere. there is someone saying Tommy Maddox is our starting QB. How did that season turn out?

Faneca had to say that, he was buds with Tommy and Ben was the rook coming in.

Not quite sure what about Faneca’s comment on losing his friend and starting QB to injury has to do with anything tho?

Are you wishing injury on Mason already before we’ve even drafted a 1st round QB?

I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that this is Colberts way of saying that Rudolph will be the veteran option in 2022, they won’t be signing or trading for another veteran.

Colbert has done great things for the Steelers and is probably under consideration as a Hall of Famer. However, he isn't going to be with the team next year and really shouldn't have much of a voice in next year's QB. All I know is Tomlin has indicated Mason and Haskins would compete for the job and none of the teammates asked about the starting QB next year has given a full vote of confidence for Rudolph. That speaks volumes to how they look at the guy.

His last press conference isn't leaning towards Rudy starting. I think they would really have to suck up free agency to have to default to starting him. Colbert said they will bring 4 QBs to camp. Even without knowing who I would be surprised if Rudy beats out 3 QBs to start. We can revisit when we know who is who. But even with that extensive list in possibilities the board has talked about very few seem incapable of beating him out.

Kevin’s said “if the season started today, Mason would be our QB”. Of course he would! The key to what Kevin said is if the season started today, He was careful not to say Mason is the projected starter when the season starts. He wasn’t going out on that limb but was ok saying what he said, we have no one else at the present so it’s his by default. Ask Kevin that question let’s say in two months and he will have a different answer for sure. Could be Jimmy G, or Mitch Trubisky, Jameis Winston, or even Marcus Mariotta, but bet it’s not Mason.

I, for one, am glad that they aren't starting the season today.

I’m having fun pissing people off on FB by saying this:
Funny that when you’re critical of the head coach who’s only won 3 playoff games in 12 years people tell you you’re “not a real fan” and “trust the front office” but when the same head coach and front office say it’s likely they’ll start the backup QB then suddenly they don’t know WTH they’re doing.
:boink:

I heard a radio spot on DVE a few days ago where Colbert said accuracy was the most important aspect of evaluating a QB, and without it mobility and speed don't mean a thing.
Now maybe he was just blowing smoke, guess we'll see.

Yeah, and if I was stranded on a deserted island with Angelina Jolie, I’d be her boyfriend. Provided there were no cylindrical or cone shaped fruits or vegetables growing on the island.
