Some big name schools are looking for new coaches and two of them found them already. Nebraska and Florida found their guys, leaving Michigan as the big job left open.
Nebraska - Mike Riley from Oregon State. He also coached the Chargers, i believe through the Ryan Leaf years, which is why he didn't last long there. He's 61 so it's probably a short term hire. Nebraska seems to have realized they can't just run option and win anymore. Riley will install an NFL style passing game.
They hired Bill Callahan from the Raiders to do the same but they lost patience and went back to the quick fix of Pellini and the option. It seems now they know they that ship has sailed. Riley will get them up and running (and passing) and then probably retire and hand of to a young coach. I'm thinking by that time former Nebraska QB Scott Frost, who is currently the Oregon OC, will be the man for the job.
Florida - Jim McElwain from Colorado State. Florida has to pay CSU $5 Million and they will play a game vs CSU in the future where CSU gets a guaranteed $2 Mil for that game. That is before they pay McElwain his new salary. Plus they have to pay the rest of Muschamp's contract. That's a ton of money for this guy.
Why pay so much? Because he is an offensive coach who has SEC experience as he was Alabama's OC just a few years ago.
Muschamp got a raw deal. People don't realize what a mess Urban Meyer left. Muschamp had to do the hard work of rebuilding and he was fired before he got a chance to reap the benefit of that. McElwain inherits a program that is not far from being a contender.
Michigan - they just got around to firing Hoke. Will they wait for Harbaugh? That's a big risk. There's a reason why Nebraska and Florida moved so quickly. A recruiting class can fall apart quickly when there is no coach. Penn State had a great recruiting class lined up even with the initial sanctions, but then they took a long time to hire O'Brien and O'Brien stayed with the Pats through the Super Bowl. In that time, they lost the biggest recruits.
Michigan's problem is not lack of talent. They've got plenty of talent and that's why Hoke had to go. Last year Michigan had both OTs drafted, one in the top 10. They also had a running QB, and they still couldn't run the ball. How is that even possible?
If Michigan waits for Harbaugh and he doesn't take the job, they could be in trouble. Their recruiting class would likely be gone. It already is as they've fallen down to about the 60th best class with just 6 commits. If they can make a quick hire, they can probably salvage a decent class.
If they wait and get Harbaugh, his name and hype can possibly get a decent class in just a few weeks. But if they wait and miss on Harbaugh and don't get a big name coach, this year is probably lost.
There are rumors that former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr is trying to block Harbaugh and also the other big candidate, Les Miles. Miles has won big but he does not enjoy the safe Nick Saban status. He could be one mediocre season away from unemployed and jumping ship early to a more secure job and Michigan would make sense. If Michigan people are actually giving Lloyd Carr a say, that tells you a bit of why they are struggling.
But here's the best suggestion for Michigan..... Jim Tressell. Imagine going from OSU to Michigan.
