College Football Championship Week

Friday Games

Sun Belt
Troy vs 25 James Madison 7:00 ESPN JMU -23.5
JMU coach Chesney has reportedly taken the UCLA job. That's a mistake because it's one of the worst jobs. No support from fans or the university.

Conference USA
Kennesaw State vs Jacksonville State 7:00 CBSSN Kenn -2.5
Owls vs Gamecocks. That's all i got on this one.

American Conference
24 North Texas vs 20 Tulane 8:00 ABC UNT -2.5
Both coaches have accepted new jobs but will coach this game. Tulane coach Sumerall is leaving for Florida. NT coach Eric Morris is going to Oklahoma State. The winner of this game has a shot at the G5 slot in the playoffs.

Mountain West
UNLV at Boise State 8:00 FOX BSU -4.5

Saturday Games

Big 12
11 BYU vs 4 Texas Tech 12:00 ABC TTU -12.5
Both have 1 loss. The loser likely has no chance at a playoff spot because having 2 Big 12 teams would remove an SEC team and that's not happening.
add BYU coach Sitake to the list of coaches who got new contracts due to Penn State. Texas Tech may be the best team in Texas this year. This is their first time playing in the Big 12 championship. Tech spent a lot of money in the portal to buy this team.

MAC
Miami OH vs Western Michigan 12:00 ESPN WMU -2.5
The winner will get to play in a slightly better bowl game someplace warm.

SEC
3 Georgia vs 9 Alabama 4:00 ABC UGA -2.5
Georgia is a playoff lock even with a loss, but they'd lose the Bye. Bama could be out with a loss. Kirby Smart is 1-7 against Bama. Kentucky fired Mark Stoops so Smart is now the longest tenured SEC coach with just 10 years.

Big 10
2 Indiana vs 1 Ohio State 8:00 FOX OSU -4
both teams are undefeated and a playoff lock. Winner will get a bye and the 1 seed. If it's a close game, the loser may still get a bye with the 3 or 4 seed. Ohio State OC Brian Hartline accepted the USF job but he will coach in this game. The Heisman may also be on the line if Mendoza can have a big game he may win it.

ACC
Duke vs 17 Virginia 8:00 ABC UVA -3.5
unranked Duke finds themselves in the ACC Championship over #12 Miami who can't stop crying about Notre Dame. Maybe you shouldn't have lost to unranked SMU and Louisville.

No way the loser of the OSU/IU game drops below 4, they’re getting a bye.

Need to do away with these games and start the playoffs the week after rivalry week. Also, need to push signing day and portal window past the end of the playoffs.

Such a poorly run sport considering all the $$$ they generate.

Doesn't that window have to do with the academic calendar so players can enroll? They need to change the CFP calendar.

I’ll never understand why the SEC championship isn’t a prime time game. Probably the biggest championship game on the calendar and it’s at 4. I’ll be watching the JMU game as they have a long shot at reaching the playoff, as well as the SEC and BIG championships. The rest are basically football cannon fodder.

curious about hartline,,,, vs. lane kiffens situation.

I assume you mean, why would Hartline be allowed to stay while Ole Miss kicked lane out the door. The difference is that Kiffin would have spent every moment stealing every player, coach and light bulb he could if he stayed there. Penn State made that mistake by not firing some staffers loyal to Franklin and there are reports those staffers were recruiting for VT while on payroll for Penn State.

The difference with Hartline is Ohio State has no fear of Hartline taking players with him to South Florida. He may take a few but those would likely be guys buried on the depth chart who OSU is not worried about losing. If Hartline had gone to Penn State, I bet he'd be out like Kiffin.

If ABC controlled both the SEC and Big 10, i'd bet they would put B10 at 4 and SEC at 8. But FOX has the B10 and wants it primetime so ABC doesn't want to go head to head and split the ratings.

It's a tough call, but Kiffin will probably do that anyway. This may be THE chance for Ole Miss to make a run at a CFP title, they should maximize that chance because this team could take a step back.

I'm glad to see at least some pushback against players. It went from players having no power at all to having way too much. It's not good for anybody to see kids jumping to 3 and 4 different programs.

Matt Campbell is a great hire for Penn State. He got every ounce out of the limited budget and talent at Iowa State. Apparently he's turned down multiple NFL opportunities over the last 10 years.

You’re probably right, another reason to lose the conference championship games and speed this thing up. And go back to 11 regular season games, when did 12 become the norm?

You know what else needs to be fixed? The locale of these playoff games. I get that they want to keep the bowls, but that heavily favors teams in the south and out west.

Some of Ohio State’s recent “neutral site” games:

01/10/2025: vs. Texas in Dallas
01/01/2025: vs. Oregon in Pasadena
12/31/2022: vs. Georgia in Atlanta

Today, just dumb luck they play Indiana in Indianapolis.

In fairness, the BIG championship has been held in Indianapolis for years. I think it’s dumber luck that Indiana landed Cignetti, caught lightning in a bottle and in two years is a national title contender with players mostly from JMU.

Personally, I don’t think it matters where Ohio State plays Indiana.
They win by at least two scores anywhere.
The three best teams playing today are Ohio State, Texas Tech, and Georgia by a fairly comfortable margin in each case.

It’s lame that teams that earn a bye don’t get a home game. They need to give at least every higher seeded team one home game.

How long until we see a CBA for the players?

Outside of an expanded playoffs, it seems like the next step for college football will be the Super League creating a high-revenue group of teams that separates from the rest of college athletics. This should (hopefully) allow non-revenue sports to get back to regional conferences that make sense as well as create a multi-tier system of football that doesn't have so much financial imbalance.
