College football qb offered 5 mil to transfer

Wow, turning that down took some loyalty and dedication from Maye which you don't often see much of these days. Let's hope he doesn't tear up his knee next year.

They f'd up when they opened this thing up to getting paid. They needed to put limits on it from the start. This is now a free for all and makes college football no better than the NFL. A lot of people used to love watching college football so much more than the NFL because it was playing for the love of the game. I understand the need for some money but room and board and spending money is about it. I can't see any reason for them to get more than $1 million or really even $500k a year. That is more than enough. They should also have stipulations that they have to give their money back if they don't play games (regular season or bowl games) to "get ready for the NFL combine."

This is worse than the NFL, there doesn't seem to be any restrictions with the portal.
"Sorry Coach, but I won't make practice tomorrow, just got 2 million to go to the west coast."

Well, there’s many more players being offered many more millions to make themselves eligible for the draft.
Totally different thing.. this is literally just boosters paying mercenaries to play for their team… no limitations… at least in the old system they were limited by how much they could hide and still get it to the player…

College should have simply said that students had the right to get the going market rate of a percentage of sold items with their names attached, and a standardized rate of commercial appearance fees.. so it was kind of equalized… these guys aren’t really getting millions to make appearances for joe billionaire’s car sales … its just a straight bribe to play disguised as an image contract…

What you are essentially arguing is that the colleges, not the athletes, are the ones who should be making fortunes off the athletes.

The corruption began the first time a a supposed academic institution offered an athletic scholarship.

No, its fine that they get a piece of the pie, but full out booster led no limit payment was always a terrible idea… no different than a sports league without a cap… hell worse probably because those nutjob boosters have no care about profit or fairness

"Completely missing the ******* point while mixing apples and oranges for $500, Alex."
It’s not at all apples and oranges. It’s entertainment, players are entertainers, and there’s a lot of money it.

Scholarship athletes get a free education in exchange for their play. That's how it's always been. The athletes realistically need a little more to survive and even enjoy their college time but they should not be a part of the revenue intake the school's make for the programs. This is not professional sports. The NFL has rules (as they definitely should or younger players would get destroyed) for players needing to play so many years in college. I don't view it as corruption until the players are getting bribed to play or not play, etc. That is corruption not giving a free education for playing a sport.

Fairness in college football? Since when? The same handful of teams compete for the National Championship year after year mostly because their academic institutions are willing to throw more money into the program.

We agree finally.

End athletic "scholarships." A ton of the recipients are too stupid to belong in college. If a student wants to play sports, he is welcome to do so. If the student needs to be paid for doing so, let him go earn a living and best of luck.

P.S. As to any protest you have that "well, the [fill in name of professional league] requires players be [x] years old," welcome to reality. Other professions have age limits as well.

CANDIDATE SHOULD HAVE ATTAINED THE MINIMUM AGE OF 18:
The minimum age for deputy sheriffs in LA County is 19.5 years to apply and 20 years at the time of appointment.

Academic institutions monopolized what is really semi-professional football. I love college football, but that’s corrupt. It’s the only way for an amateur high school football player to become a professional. There’s not a good legal argument for why that player shouldn’t be able to profit as much as possible on his ability because it’s athletic ability. Teenage singers and actors can make millions, but not athletes? Why?

college athletes do get a stipend. Not a lot, but they get some spending money. a cousin went to school on a golf scholarship and got carrying-around money.

of course this is all different per the sport. i know some of the college basketball players when i was in school were driving brand new cars, that cost more than thier parents' homes. athletes generate a **** ton of income for colleges, so it can make you wonder why tuition continues to rise.

Let's be real, he didn't return to UNC for free.

They did screw up. They could've allowed NIL before and it could've been regulated and actually NIL. The collectives at the schools is straight up pay-for-play, which isn't NIL. There aren't many college players who would get top dollar on true NIL deals unless they have a huge social media following or a top athlete in their sport. With these ridiculous TV contracts, I wonder how long these idiot boosters will keep being the ones to pay for the athletes. If college players are getting paid, it should be the players earning these massive TV deals and they should share a part of the revenue. I just don't see boosters sustaining this forever with no return on investment outside of ego and maybe a few extra wins a year. People donating a million dollars get a building named after them, nothing with the players outside of maybe access to the team. But those prices are going to keep going up and rich people don't get rich by spending money.

No biggie
Nothing to see here
Product is still far more enjoyable than the NFL

Hope all these kids make every last dime they can, they deserved it for a long damn time

Yes. The number of published scholars in the nfl is staggering.
It has nothing to do with that. They are getting a free education while they grow big and strong enough to not get killed in the NFL. It's not like the NBA or baseball that aren't as physical. Everyone knows this. High school players could go directly to the NFL but would have to sit for years and owners know that. They don't want to pay any more than they have to plus most high school players develop in college and then are ready to be drafted. It would be an even bigger gamble drafting high school players into the NFL who would sit and may never be ready to play in the NFL.
