College Football Week 9

Penn State is on a Bye. Last week, they played better vs Iowa but still came up short because nobody on defense can tackle. New QB Ethan Grunkemeyer looked shaky at times but did make some plays. Not bad for a 1st start on the road at night in Iowa. There were a few minor offensive tweaks but it was a short week with the turmoil, so mostly the same stuff.

Word is PSU closed practice and is installing some new offense. I guess we'll see. OC Andy Kotalniki is coaching for his career. If the offense continues to sputter, his next job may have to be a step backwards. If he can spark this offense, then maybe it means Franklin was the guy forcing conservative playcalling. I'm not holding my breathe.

UCLA at 2 Indiana 12:00 FOX IU -25.5
a QB scout game. Nico is putting himself back on draft boards. Indiana QB Mendoza is now a top Heisman candidate. Cignetti got paid. It's funny that last week everyone was asking how PSU could give Franklin a contract with such a huge buyout then Indiana gives Cignetti 90+ million guaranteed and nobody bats an eye. UCLA is like a different team since firing their coach. Tough noon start for a west coast team.

8 Ole Miss at 13 Oklahoma 12:00 ABC OU -5.5
offense vs defense. Ole Miss coming off a competitive loss to Georgia. Oklahoma rebounded from their Texas loss with a solid win vs South Carolina. Neither team can afford loss #2. Venables could be on the hot seat is OK misses the playoffs. Kiffin may have interest in the Florida or Penn State jobs, or at least pretending he does to get a big check from Ole Miss.

4 Alabama at South Carolina 3:30 ABC Ala -11.5
Lanorris Sellers was seen as a potential top 10 pick but he's had a disastrous season. Could this be a trap game for Bama sandwiched between Tenn and LSU games? Probably not. SC has not played well enough to beat a good team. Like just about every coach with a competent agent, Kalen DeBoer is getting mentioned for the Penn State job. He's a small town northern guy and he's already had tons of pressure at Bama. Could he prefer to coach in a northern small town?

15 Missouri at 10 Vanderbilt 3:30 ESPN Van -2.5
How good are these teams? Nobody knows. Both lost to Bama. The best win for Mz is 2 OT vs Auburn. Vandy beat LSU, but then how good are they? Beau Pribula's numbers have dipped in SEC play. He has 4 INTs in the last 2 games and has 7 on the season. Pavia is having a strong season for Vandy. This should be an entertaining game at least.

11 BYU at Iowa State 3:30 FOX ISU -2.5

undefeated and #11 BYU is an underdog to 2 loss Iowa State. ISU just lost to Colorado. Shocker, but ISU coach Matt Campbell is in PSU rumors. He's a really good coach wo is winning without resources.

23 Illinois at Washington 3:30 BTN Wash -4.5
How good is Illinois. Their only 2 losses are to 1 Ohio State and 2 Indiana. Washington is a tough place to play. It will be interesting to see how Ill fares against a good team not ranked in the top 2.

NC State at Pitt 3:30 ACCN Pitt -6.5
hey Pitt, don't mess up our new field. The ACC is wide open and Pitt is in the mix with just 1 ACC loss. The offense has been better after a QB switch to freshman Mason Heintschel. I wonder which big name team will buy him to start next year.

Stanford at 9 Miami 7:00 ESPN Mia -30.5
Miami blew it last week vs Louisville when Carson Beck reminded everyone why Georgia wasn't sad to see him go. Beck is kind of like Jameis Winston if Jameis had the personality of a bar of soap. Miami often implodes after a loss. Will they get back to business or flame out as they have for so many seasons?

3 Texas A&M at 20 LSU 7:30 ABC TAM -2.5
Hey, LSU beat Clemson! They must be ranked. Nussmeier has been awful for LSU and so has their offense. TAM was lucky to beat Notre Dame early in the season. I think ND would curb stomp them now. Aside from that, TAM has played the basement of the SEC. With 2 losses, every game is must win for LSU now. Will Brian Kelly be back next year? The guy left ND because they didn't pay players, then NIL comes around and they're allowed to pay players. Marcus Freeman should send him a fruit basket or something.

Houston at 24 Arizona State 8:00
Houston is still in the mix for the Big 12. So is ASU. QB Sam Leavitt was seen as a potential 1st rounder but the ASU passing game has struggled. HIs stats have come up the last few weeks, including 300 yards in the upset of #7 Texas Tech last week.

Colorado at Utah 10:15 ESPN Utah -13.5
The nightcap game. Utah lost a close one to rival BYU last week. For the Utes, a Buffalo hunt may be just what they need to get their mojo back. The Buffaloes are hoping not to be chased off a cliff.

Thanks tape for these weekly posts!
They are great man!
And mega kudos for the Notre Dame favorable comments....those come few and far between on this board.. Glad someone is paying attention and being fair and balanced! Sorry Brett Baier! :)

Penn State has been on their "Bye" week since the start.

Love the comments about Carson Beck.

I would probably do more than laugh; but Coach DeBoer has turned things around this year so...NO...you can't have him - yet...

lol

You're going to have to laugh, too, when they break out this mysterious new offense against Ohio State. To keep from crying.

Arizona States top target - Jordan Tyson is out, but UH will be missing their fastest wideout - Stephon Johnson and their big man in the middle of the DL - Carlos Allen Jr is questionable. If Allen misses the game it will be a huge loss, he is a beast in the running game

At least there's no way they can lose this week!

Bama at #4 is impressive as for awhile there they looked.————- not so good.

Should have no problem with this up coming game.

Man, you change like the wind.
Oh, my distain is still there---he's been winning the games we should win (lately). I still don't like the super aggressive 4th down attempts when it's not necessary; but, again, if he loses to another sub par team---you'll see more than my pitchfork chasing him out of town - his leash only has 2 links...

Hard to tell and @tapeANaspirin2it hit it on the head - this COULD very well be a trap game and I don't know if I will watch live or wait until I can lock myself in my office on Saturday night w/ a hammer or baseball bat???

I’m just relieved I won’t feel compelled to watch this week. The next two weeks are going to be painful for Penn State. I expect the results to be exceptionally bad.

I would invite you to watch Bama but you've already expressed your non-interest...plus, we could have another FSU type of game against another ultra mobile QB...

With that kind of arsenal and being locked in your office, stay sober enough to remember to start with the cheap stuff and work your way up…….. if need

believe me, I'm not expecting drastic change. I'd settle for the young WRs Howard and Denmark being used a lot more and at least a pass plays downfield that don't require a jet sweep motion and the QB waiting on slow developing routes.

Apparently Kotalniki has already said he'll use 2 QB again. Why? The backup Jaxon Smolek is no more athletic than Grunkemeyer. Unless that 2nd QB is Kaytron or Singleton doing wildcat, then I don't understand the point.

Gonna watch UCLA-Indiana and then Vandy-Mizzou. Gonna smoke a 1 1/2 pound sirloin done up in carne asada marinade. Might watch a little of UFC 321 this afternoon. Looking forward to a stress free Saturday.

If he actually said this, then he should be fired today. The two QB last week was stupid. In fact, his whole offense is stupid and incredibly unimaginative. Oh how far we’ve fallen.

Alabama wasn't supposed to beat Georgia in Athens, were they? Give DeBoer a break -- they've won four games in a row against ranked opponents. You are tough to please, my man.

I tried to research if a team has ever faced #1 and #2 in back-to-back weeks during the regular season. It's probably happened before, but I couldn't find another example of it.

Smolik is hurt. You won't believe who they're planning to use.
