The Steelers have benched LCB Cortez Allen.
Fresh off inking a five-year, $26 million extension in early September, Allen has graded out as Pro Football Focus' worst cornerback out of 103 qualifiers. He's taken seven penalties, missed seven tackles, and allowed three touchdowns. Brice McCain will get the start opposite William Gay, who's in the lineup for Ike Taylor (forearm). Fire up Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins on Monday. Oct 17 - 11:00 AM

And yet Cam's worthless *** is still playing over 50% of our snaps at DE.

Maybe its the first of many changes?

someone finally feeling the heat?

whatever whatever I will take it. It is about time some kind of change is made.

Although in the end I hope it is a coaching one.

Well you won't see a change with Cam Thomas, especially this week. Both Keisel and McClendon are hurt, if they are available it will be in a very limited role. So you're looking at Cam Thomas starting at NT, McCullers getting a hat as the back-up at NT, and Tuitt possibly getting his first start. Definitely thinning out an already thin unit.

Why did we extend his contract, why did we not try to find SOMEONE who play defense in the secondary.

Don't you remember? Keenan Lewis got hurt his last year here towards the end of the year, and Cortez came in and got a lucky bounce INT and recovered a fumble. That was all we need to see to PROVE that he was a playmaker...duh!

On a serious note, he did show some promise, and his size is a plus. Unfortunately for us, he's regressed, he's playing lazy. He has the speed and the agility, but he'd rather grab and jog then run with the WR/TE's he covering. This is one of those cases where he got his money and now he's content.

Saw this earlier today. Cortez was benched last year too before getting the starting job back.

there's a lot of guys that should be benched...this, to me, is a joke.

I don't have a problem benching him. However I'm not sure McCain is going to be much better. Pro Football Focus ranks Allen dead last among all cornerbacks in 2014. Not that I'm all that big on PFF stats that can't be a good thing.

I fully agree with you, but you know as well as I do, you have to have 11 on defense ;)

Taylor is the one who got hurt toward the end of Lewis' time with the Steelers.

Regardless, I liked Allen a lot as well. He showed a lot of good things as a part time player in 2011 and 2012, but the more he has played over the past two seasons, the worse he has looked. He simply isn't that good.

Despite how bad the Saints defense has been this season overall, Lewis still plays well.

The Steelers obviously chose the wrong player between he and Allen

It's merely another "brick in the wall" of the Tombert regime.

Hey...no Floyd references should be used inconjunction with those two *** munchers please...

And how about benching timdong after last weeks where the **** am I performance?

Allen played really well the second half of last year, not sure what his problem is this year, but he definitely regressed. I can see Tomlin "benching" him for a series then letting him go back out there.

Hopefully this benching lights a fire under Allen to play better. I remember some years back when Cowher benched Ike Taylor for poor play and Taylor came back better than ever after it. Don't let em get too comfortable in his starter spot. Maybe they should do something similar in other positions..

The game I'm referring to, however, was one where Lewis was hurt and pulled, and Allen took his place.

Fire whoever gave the green light to signing him to a new contract!

no maybe. Wheaton, Thomas.... should both be benched as well.

Benching is a temporary fix. It does however wake up the rest of the team. I hope McCullers does well and plants himself as a main force.

Well at least the Steelers are starting to see this is as a problem area. There for awhile I thought the coaching staff was going blind.

Instead of rose colored glasses they are just looking through cool shades

Since we're on the subject of defensive backs, here's a thought that should keep any Steeler fan awake the next couple days before the game Monday night....Andre Johnson is most likely going to be matched up most of the game with(gulp) ... Willie Gay. Yes sir, William "lock 'em down" Gay... our current #1 corner that is currently playing in his 8th season in the NFL... has played in 118 games... started 66 of them... and has a grand total of (drumroll please)..... 6 interceptions!!! That's right.. 6 interceptions in 7+ years in the league. Probably the worst ball skills of any NFL defensive back I've ever seen is going to be guarding a big, physical reciever with some of the best ball skills I've ever seen. Even if Andre is a little past his prime, he is going to eat #22's lunch all night... as so many, much less talented recievers have done in the past. This would be fun to watch if I wasn't a Steeler fan.

Roll a S to double? and a TE to chip JJW. But that would make too much sense.
