1. I watch college football, but not a ton like i do NFL, but why did we pass on Mosley for Shazier?

2. Baltimore leaves their big Dlinemen in on passing downs quite a bit and they just collapse the pocket, I wish we'd do away with our 2DL formation on passing downs, no size results in little pressure up the middle ever.

They took Shazier over Mosley for the same reason they took Bell over Lacy. Shazier is a superior athlete who is far more versatile,

When you go nickel you add an extra DB so you have to take out a front 7 player. Generally you take out your least effective pass defender or rusher. The Ravens take out a run stuffing LB who can't cover. The Steelers take out a big DL that can't rush. The Steelers need to keep the LBs on the field for pass rush and for coverage.

I didn't see much of Shazier in college, but Mosley looks like a pretty damn good LB.

I know why we go with the 2-4-5 formation on D, I just don't agree with it, none of our LB's can cover, I'd rather put some beef on the line and try to get some kind of push in the interior of the oline, 3DL-3LB's-5DB's

Mosely is good but what he is good at is redundant with Timmons. The Steelers wanted a coverage LB so they can stay in their base 3-4 most of the time. With the rise of up tempo offenses, it's an advantage if a defense can defend most things with their base.

The teams that depend on sub packages are in trouble when these up tempo teams "trap" a certain package on the field by not allowing them to substitute and then they can dictate the matchups.

Shazier looked like the right choice. I still think he'll prove to be. More athletic, plus Mosley was a major injury case at Bama. (Shazier's rookie year is nothing compared to Mosley's injuries.) Shazier has the higher ceiling and less health risk.

Plus, what all Tape said.

Interesting as well the cowboys also were planing on selecting him and were talking to him at the time the steelers selected him, the next team was picking him as well.

I didnt know much about Shazier prior to us taking him since he was a Buckeye. I tend to discount BIG10 players just because they seem to be slow plodders and don't face as much speed as SEC players do week in and week out.

though from what I've seen in the few times Shazier has been on the field, we made the hands-down better choice between the two.

Excellent post, sir...

I agree here too - while Mosley isn't "prone" to injury, his past does have some big injuries that he's overcame. He's a very instinctive ILB and can do everything that Timmons does, as Tape eluded too as well. Like Supe, I don't follow the Big 10, unless they're playing an SEC team, Shazier, IMO, is and was the better choice for the Steelers.

How would we know if our LB's can cover? We can't keep any of them healthy, except for the 63 year old Harrison.

Haha solid points, but Worlds has been healthy this year and looks lost in coverage, Timmons is always a step or two behind, and Harrison has never been to good in coverage. I guess Shazier is the guy we need healthy.
when he is healthy, we have 2 DE's on the field that line up as DT's, then our OLB's pass rush, we are so under-sized in that formation we get no push. Would rather see Keisel-NT-Heyward along the Dline on passing downs with Timmons-Shazier(when healthy)-Harrison at LB, Worilds can sub in for Harrison some if needed

Hope our OL can create the same running lanes and pound the Saints into submission.

We also haven't seen much of Shazier in the line up since the tweaks to the D have been made. While still not playing GREAT, they are improved over the start of the season. Unfortunately Shazier hasn't been healthy during that stretch.

It is WAY too early to predict who will have the better career in Mosley or Shazier. Shazier as of now has been injured and unable to play so Mosley looks to be the better pick. But last year Eddie Lacy stayed healthy while Bell was injured and if we just went off of the rookie season Lacy would hands down be the better of the two running backs.

Eddie Lacy Rookie season.
1,178 yards at 4.1 ypc with 11 TDs and 257 receiving yards 0 TDs

Le'Veon bell Rookie season
860 yards at 3.5 ypc with 8 TDs 399 receiving yards 0 TDs

This year
Eddie Lacy
672 yards at 4.4 ypc with 6 TDs with 335 receiving yards and 3 TDs
Le'Veon Bell
951 yards at 4.9 ypc with 2 TDs with 484 receiving yards and 2 TDs

So lets give Shazier a chance before saying we should have taken Mosley. If injuries plague him then yes he will never be as good as Mosley but I feel if he can get healthy this year before the playoffs he could be a vital weapon for a playoff run.

The problem with taking players like Shazier, Sylvester, Spence and Davis and paring them with Timmons is that they all play the same position. They are all mack ILbs. Williams is the only true buck ILB on the team. Timmons has struggled mightily this year. It's great to have more speed on the field. However when your buck ILB is over running plays and getting caught up in the wash it opens huge lanes. I was all for drafting Shazier but I see the issues with having too many mack ILbs.

I never said we should've taken Mosley, or that he's going to be better, but was thinking along the lines of Vader, Shazier is a faster more athletic Timmons.

You guys do a lot more ILB blitzing than we do. If shazier doesn't get picked up on a blitz he'll be home really quickly. I think he'll be a solid contributor for years. That being said, love me some Mosley. No big hits, shed blocks, wrap tackles. Solid fundamentals for a rookie. Should win DROY in a walk IMO.

Dri Archer is winning both DRoY and ORoY.
