It could be nothing, or it could be something. It’s hard to tell in today’s day and age of social media.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland made a post on Instagram this morning of him in his Steelers uniform with the song “Set me Free” playing in the background.

Now McFarland was expected to play a huge role in Matt Canada’s offense this season, but an injury prior to the regular season cost him several weeks. Once he returned it was expected that he would jump right into the offense and play a major role with Najee Harris. That never happened. McFarland dressed for one game and had two yards rushing. It was a month later before he dressed again. This time it would be his last for the Steelers in 2021. He produced 1 rush for 1 yard.

The Steelers drafted McFarland in 2020 to be a change of pace back behind then starter James Conner. He appeared in 11 games in 2020 rushing for 133 yards, and hauling in 54 yards receiving.

It’s especially suprising that McFarland wasn’t used considering that he and Canada were together at Maryland when McFarland had his best collegiate season. Rushing for more that 1600 yards and 13 touchdowns during his sophomore campaign.

This was what Canada had to say about McFarland when he was hired by the Steelers.

“We were really excited when that worked out for us because I certainly have strong feelings for him [Anthony McFarland] as well,” said Canada in a press conference on Tuesday. “He is an explosive back, a dynamic back. He can take a five- or eight-yard gain and make it a very big play in a hurry, which he has done and shown in his play in college and the time I was with him.”

“I am excited to have him around. He is excited. He is learning, he is working, he is doing everything that I hoped he would be doing… I think he will find his niche and have a role for us.”

The Steelers need a running back behind Harris to take the work load off of him. It appears they don’t believe McFarland is that guy any longer.

Was pretty odd. Perhaps he was deficient as a blocker and they couldn't afford to put him in with a Oline that had issues themselves. Just spitballing here.

Set him free does not want to be a Steeler so be it, We have had enough talkers find players that want to play to win ,not cry all the time. It is old

We are taking volunteers not hostages.

Reason number one billion that you fix the line before drafting RBs… if they had just drafted linemen with a couple of these mid round rbs and just used low round rbs as backups we’d be in better shape with probably about the same production or better

Or they could have done a better job in free agency and subsequently not hand the starting C job over to a draft conversion project. Or take a whole season to identify it was the wrong choice. The RB choice was actually solid. It is just their overall decision making sucked so bad that the Oline and Dline suffered because of it. Now for the bad news. Both of those decision makers are front lining decisions again this offseason when the club has finally more money to wheel and deal. And potentially 1O mil more if they terminate Tuitt and Banner's contracts.

So tell me what is the odds they make the right decisions this time around?

4 guys I would consider the change of pace, screen specialist James Cook UGA Dalvin Lil bro is as fast a great receiver and can 0-100 very fast
Hassan Haskins with a new QB and perhaps wanting a maybe a 5.5-4.5 run-pass ratio Haskins is a load to bring down, a bruiser may be viewed as a starter if they're in the 4th-5 could turn out better than Snell
Heward JR MSU all-around swiss army back can play RB/FB and TE a faster version than former steeler TE/FB David Johnson.
CJ Verdell small scat-back missed time and will be available late can do the same stuff McFarland was expected change pace and be a threat as a receiver.

Another midget RB with speed that Tomlin stupidly loves and who failed

I think he is asking to be set free of the NFL.

wears Rod Woodsons number , and obviously thinks hes on the same level. Evidence of Enjoying your own Farts.

He wasn’t a draftable player. He wasn’t even the best RB on his team coming out that year. Cut him. He’ll never make another NFL roster.
