It could be nothing, or it could be something. It’s hard to tell in today’s day and age of social media.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland made a post on Instagram this morning of him in his Steelers uniform with the song “Set me Free” playing in the background.

Now McFarland was expected to play a huge role in Matt Canada’s offense this season, but an injury prior to the regular season cost him several weeks. Once he returned it was expected that he would jump right into the offense and play a major role with Najee Harris. That never happened. McFarland dressed for one game and had two yards rushing. It was a month later before he dressed again. This time it would be his last for the Steelers in 2021. He produced 1 rush for 1 yard.
The Steelers drafted McFarland in 2020 to be a change of pace back behind then starter James Conner. He appeared in 11 games in 2020 rushing for 133 yards, and hauling in 54 yards receiving.
It’s especially suprising that McFarland wasn’t used considering that he and Canada were together at Maryland when McFarland had his best collegiate season. Rushing for more that 1600 yards and 13 touchdowns during his sophomore campaign.
This was what Canada had to say about McFarland when he was hired by the Steelers.
“We were really excited when that worked out for us because I certainly have strong feelings for him [Anthony McFarland] as well,” said Canada in a press conference on Tuesday. “He is an explosive back, a dynamic back. He can take a five- or eight-yard gain and make it a very big play in a hurry, which he has done and shown in his play in college and the time I was with him.”
“I am excited to have him around. He is excited. He is learning, he is working, he is doing everything that I hoped he would be doing… I think he will find his niche and have a role for us.”
The Steelers need a running back behind Harris to take the work load off of him. It appears they don’t believe McFarland is that guy any longer.
