Well, the new 2022 NFL season is officially underway as the NFL free agency process has opened up! The NFL as a whole has seen a blockbuster amount of moves already in just these past few days and the Pittsburgh Steelers have not shied away from being active in the market. Steeler Nation has heard their beloved Steelers name attached to not only a few high profile free agents, but also potential trade targets that could fill some needs on the Steelers’ roster.

The most important, as of late, has been at the quarterback position where a number of players’ names have been mentioned as potential successors to future Hall of Fame quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, following his retirement after the 2021 season. So far this off-season, we have heard free agent QBs such as Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston and Mitch Trubisky’s names being thrown around as potential suitors in the free agent market, as well as potential rookie replacements Kenny Pickett, Malik Willis and Matt Corral as potential young talent that could be addressed with this year’s 20th pick in the NFL Draft.

As far as free agents go, I think that question has been answered as it has been reported that the Steelers have signed former Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitch Trubisky to a 2-year deal that will potentially set him up to be the next starting quarterback of this football team. I say potentially with a grain of salt, as I do believe there will be an open competition between himself, Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins for who will be under center for the 2022 season, with the obvious advantage going in Trubisky’s favor. The organization has been vocal this off-season about their belief in Rudolph’s ability and how he has not gotten a fair chance to prove himself in this league as of yet. While many disagree, the reported signing of Trubisky automatically makes the QB1 position a competitive one between the two at least, that is something Steeler Nation has not seen in 18 seasons.

As much as we should celebrate the signing of Trubisky and focus on the positives of what having him under center can potentially do for this offense, it also leaves some questions still unanswered. Although I do believe the Steelers are done targeting any veteran quarterback that is available around the league, does this signing mean that they are out of the quarterback pool with this year’s 20th pick in the draft? Can we honestly say that the coaching staff in Pittsburgh feels comfortable going into the new year with Trubisky and Rudolph as the QB1 and QB2?

Throughout the draft process, we had heard how heavily involved General Manager Kevin Colbert and Head Coach Mike Tomlin were in the scouting of this year’s rookie quarterback class which led many of us as fans to believe they potentially had their eye set on a particular successor in the draft. Although nothing of the sort has been communicated, and all of this talk is purely just speculation, who is to say that the Steelers organization did not “fall in love” with a guy, someone who they thought could be the next leader of their franchise. Although it seems unlikely with the Trubisky signing especially, if one of the young guns stated before ends up falling to the Steelers with the 20th pick, who is to say that they don’t take a chance and select what could be their future franchise quarterback, with Trubisky being the perfect “bridge quarterback.” All I am saying is, that if one of these top rookies fall into the Steelers lap at pick #20, there has to be some sort of consideration.

Do you think the signing of Trubisky means the Steelers are done addressing the quarterback position in 2022? Comment below!
