As we approach the end of the 2021 NFL regular season and College Football Bowl season, mock drafts are plentiful. While almost none of them turn out to be even remotely accurate aside from the first few picks, fans love to read and imagine certain players landing on their favorite teams. Pittsburgh Steeler fans are no different and the 2022 NFL Draft will be one of the most important in recent memory for the storied franchise.

One of the most respected draft experts is Todd McShay with ESPN. The Steelers have several holes and not a plethora of draft capital to deal with. That didn’t stop McShay from selecting Ben Roethlisberger‘s replacement with pick #12 (which is where the Steelers would land if the regular season ended today). McShay took the bait as many in Pittsburgh are and has Kenny Pickett from the University of Pittsburgh remaining in the Steel City.

McShay notes that Pickett probably has the best combination of attributes out of any quarterback in the draft and while the Steelers need help on the offensive and defense line, at linebacker and the cornerback position, Pickett staying in Pittsburgh to further the legacy he has already created this past season seemed too attractive to pass up for McShay.

Pickett finished third in Heisman voting as the senior threw for 4,319 yards, 42 touchdowns and just seven interceptions for the Panthers this season. He added five rushing touchdowns as well. At 6’3, 220 he is an ideal size for an NFL quarterback, but some may wonder if this breakout season for him foreshadows a prominent NFL career or if Pickett is a one season wonder.

Pickett has not yet made a decision on whether he will play for the Panthers in the Peach Bowl vs. Michigan State.

Ahmad Gardner, cornerback from Cincinnati, would have been my pick here as McShay has him going 15th overall to the Minnesota Vikings. As stated above though, no one really can accurately predict this stuff. Especially in December, but it sure is fun to think about.

Do you like McShay’s selection in Pickett? Who do you want to see the Steelers go after in the first round? Let us know in the comments below!

I would also consider a massive RT in rnd 1 a long term fixture if and i am thinking a better version of Marcus Gilbert, or of Ojibwa falls him as another rusher as I have not been impressed with the leap Highsmith taking over for buf, I expected at least 5-7 sacks from him.
other OL Suber in the 4th-5th could convert him to RG mauling power run blocker, in the 6th I would take the Pitt Edge rusher really impressed me vs Wake Forest

Ok gentlemen and ladies here is what I do if I'm the GM for the 2022 off season.

1) Try and re-sign Ju Ju to an extension. He's my possession guy and moves the chains.
2) Try and resign James Washington to an extension with the promise he will be seeing extensive playing time.
3) If I can accomplish the first two steps I move Claypool out of here and try for a second round pick. He's very talented and would be better than any draft pick talent wise a team could get in the second round.
4) Free agency period I sign Mitch Trubisky to a three year contract. Don't have to give up draft capital and he shouldn't break the bank. The guys numbers are pretty damn good when he was with the Bears. TD/INT ration pretty good, pro bowl once, playoffs twice with a crappy offense and coaching. I let him fight it out with Mason and fully expect he beats him out easily. Mason is my backup.
5) First round pick I'm projecting anywhere between 10 an 15, I take a left tackle.
6) The first second round pick I take a center.
7) second second round pick I take a defensive lineman.
8) First third round pick I take either in ILB or CB or safety. best player of the three.
9) Second third round pick, I repeat step 8.
10) Meet with Tuitt and find out what his intensions are. If he wants t play his last year with the team, I move him in a trade for a fifth or sixth round pick. No more BS about sitting out the season.
11) I let Terrell Edmunds walk. Horrible reach pick. Never liked it! 3'rd 4'th round talent they selected in first. Pitiful move and has Tomlin written all over it.
12) I tell Bushy he better be ready to play come training camp. No more excuses and not accepting accountability. Come ready or we move on from you.
13) I give Buddy Johnson every opportunity to replace Bushy or Schobert.
14) I get back into FA and sign a quality guard and not some bargain basement Trai Turner type.
15) My OL is my new center from round two draft, LT is my new first round pick, LG is Big Dot IF he comes in ready and in shape but I make it a competition with Leglue and Kendrick Green. RG is my new FA addition. RT is Dan Moore.
16) Free Agency again. I sign a quality CB and Safety. CB to replace Haden who I wouldn't re-sign and safety to replace Terrell Edmunds.
17) Bring in undrafted free punters to compete with Harvin. I do not draft another punter.

These are some thoughts I had and I'm positive they will be so far from what they do it wont be funny. I have a feeling they will reach in round one for NC QB Sam Howell which I don't like but that's what I think they will do. Then they start Mason for 2022 with Sam working as his backup until they turn it over to him in 2023.
I like the FA path of selecting Trubisky better who has some success in the NFL as a starter where who knows with Sam Howell. Plus we need to invest in the OL in the first round and not on a weak QB class this coming draft just to say we drafted our future QB. That is desperation to me.

Let me hear your criticisms. I can take it!

I always look at the films/clips of the first round projection QB's and think Meh,, that guys sucks. Then they come in the league and light it up.

I like picket... i kinda think meh.. so he will probably be awesome.. Wow.. Does this feel like 1983 again or what? cept no cocaine rumors.

I would be extremely disappointed with this pick. However, since the Steelers rarely pick who the "experts" think they will or should, I'm very happy that McShay is thinking this way.

*Waiting ... waiting ....

I feel like Pickett might be the best of a shity crop. That makes me nervous as a miss at QB us generally a 4 year mistake.

Nobody is a garurantee. If we have a shot for a qb that could very well be the guy. Take it. Then I'd let Rudy start and whatever serviceable free agent qb won out in camp be backup. Draft the rest on the lines.

The mistake I see too many teams doing is throwing their first round draft pick qb right into the fire. Let him learn. Protect the future.

The team will probably suck, but it's going to suck anyway. 2 years of higher draft picks can help rebuild the lines on this team. IF they can hit on some of these picks. That also doesn't account for this year's OL draft picks making a big jump.

I highly doubt they take a QB for several reasons.

1. Pretty much universally agreed across the universe that this QB class is WEAK!
2. With no 1 being true being in the middle of the draft we will not have a shot at the ones that might be considered 1st round worthy (anything else is a reach).
3. To even get to the qb's considered decent you will have to move up. (we do not have the draft capital for that with all the other needs we have).
4. Tomlin has already stated he doesn't want a rookie QB. (tomlin knows deep down he is about to be exposed for the fraud he is, he already has lost the locker room).
5. Tomlin will push to use what draft capital we have to go after one of the soon to retire "star" qb's (rogers, wilson, dear god please not watson).

TRENCH workers first two and then ILB / CB /

Vet QB that doesn't cost huge draft / $$$$ / and let Mason & Vet compete.

DRAFT QB next year

Salute the nation

Yeah, fix the line problems first and draft a QB in a later draft.
We already see what a ****** line with a good quarterback is like and it's not pretty...

Good analysis. Still my concern is that when the crop is bad it makes the better guys look better. But you are right a bust can happen anywhere. I wish he had a longer track record but I'm assuming if the guy checked all the boxes he would be gone before they pick.

Did you not get the memo? You can not question his track record without a certain poster here getting offended. Although, to be fair, his track record is plenty LONG enough.

Nice try, but "I wish he had a longer track record" doesn't equate to having the same stupid opinion that you do. You are the only ******* who is holding Pickett's senior season against him like it's the kiss of death. He wisely stayed for another year, played very well, and has climbed up draft boards for a reason. He's become a consensus choice to be a first round pick. But you know better than everybody else because, well, just because.

Not offended, but I'm once again amused by your preoccupation with me, even though you've assured everyone that you don't care about what this certain poster thinks. Obviously, that's not the case. Carry on.

Ahhh, there's my puppy. I whistled and you came. Good boy!

I sense love in the room.

Hi Topseed. Not looking for an argument just info about the player. I looked at his stat lines. They are obviously impressive this season but they were much less so in seasons previous. What is the story behind that?

I go after Rodgers or Wilson at any cost. The O line is good enough at times. You just need a QB who can roll out and move in the pocket. If you can matriculate then Najee comes into play. Once Ju Ju comes back that type QB in Canada's offense will flourish, this will never happen with Ben....2007 Ben? Yeah that guy could pull it off. Remember, an o line that stunk as bad as this one played in SB 43....Ben could move then. Rodgers would instantly make this team a contender. Couple him with Ju Ju as Rodgers is much better at reading and reacting than Ben could ever dream of being and you've got something. Draft defense FIRST!

Neal(Bama) and Green(Texas A&M) should be gone by the Steeler's pick. Penning(N. Iowa), Cross(Miss. State), Ryhan(UCLA), Kinnard(Kentucky), Petit-Frere(Ohio State) are OT in the first. Ikem Ekwonu(N.C. State) is a first-round guard. Tyler Linderbaum(Iowa) is the best center. He will go top 15. Patterson(ND) and Lindstrom(B.C.) are next up 2-4 round grades at the center position. Faalele(Minn.)and Nelson(Miami Fla.) are borderline first to second OT. Johnson,(B.C.), Kirkland(Washington), Munford(OSU), Ekiyor(Bama), Salyer(Georgia), Broeker(Miss. State) are 2nd to 3rd round guards. It's a deep draft for an Offensive lineman. We should jump in with both feet.

Meh......I revamp the entire OL thru the draft and FA. Then I get Big Ben to come back. Not hard to do with all of the cap space everyone says we have. Protect Ben and he will make all the throws. Give Harris room to run and this offense is back on track. The defensive side.....who cares. We could have it stacked everywhere and in the end they are what they are.....a disappointment. Tomlin and Butler will need to move on for that to ever change.
