We get tired of talking about it, you get tired of reading about it. It’s been the Pittsburgh Steelers and every quarterback under the sun all off-season. So this mock draft by ESPN’s Jordan Reid should be a breath of fresh air to you and everyone else. Unless you want them to draft a quarterback, that is…

This is a complete 7 round mock draft, so lets see who Pittsburgh will select according to Reid:

20. Pittsburgh Steelers
Zion Johnson, G, Boston College

Even after adding James Daniels in free agency, the Steelers could continue to add along the offensive line.

There hasn’t been a player who I’ve been more impressed with throughout the pre-draft process than Johnson. With versatility at guard and tackle throughout his career, he gained experience at center during the all-star game circuit and didn’t suffer any type of drop-off. He could compete with free-agent signing Mason Cole for the top center spot.

Johnson had been linked to Pittsburgh heading up to the Senior Bowl, but the connection seemed to cool after they weren’t perceived to be as interested in Johnson as they were Malik Willis, and other quarterbacks. The Senior Bowl was the time that a lot of the offensive line talk stopped. They also did draft Daniels’ like Reid mentions. He should come in and boost the offensive line immediately.

52. Pittsburgh Steelers
Phidarian Mathis, IDL, Alabama

With his body type (6-foot-4, 310 pounds), strength at the point of attack and pass-rush improvement during his senior season, Mathis checks the boxes of the qualities the Steelers search for in defensive linemen.

It’s still super quiet on the Stephon Tuitt front. We’ve got little indications here and there that he wants to come back, but nothing concrete. And certainly nothing out of Tuitt specifically. Pittsburgh re-signed Montravius Adams who was signed off the New Orleans Saints practice squad last season, and he seems to be fitting in well in Pittsburgh. His addition, and the return of Tyson Alualu will help give Pittsburgh better support if Chris Wormley starts in place of Tuitt. The pick of Mathis here doesn’t really seem like a fit. Especially with Pittsburgh still having huge holes at receiver and safety. Reid has the Green Bay Packers selecting Georgia receiver George Pickens directly after the Steelers take Mathis. The Steelers have spent a ton of time with Pickens this off-season, and I believe he’d be the Steelers selection here.

84. Pittsburgh Steelers
Daniel Faalele, OT, Minnesota

The Steelers should continue their offensive line overhaul, and the 6-foot-8, 384-pound Faalele could compete at right tackle after some time adjusting to the NFL. With Dan Moore Jr. and newly re-signed Chukwuma Okorafor manning the starting tackle spots, he could be brought along slowly as a development option.

There has been zero indication from anyone in the Pittsburgh organization that they’re going to give up on Dan Moore Jr. Moore started every game for them at left tackle last year, and while he struggled, he did get better as the season went on. Moore was supposed to be a developmental pick, but when Zach Banner wasn’t ready to start the season he was thrust into the most important position on the line. Pittsburgh re-signed Chuks Okorafor to a 3-year contract, but it’s essentially a 1-year prove it deal. The Steelers could move on without much recourse after 2022 if Okorafor doesn’t produce. Safety Nick Cross is on the board here from Maryland and would be a better pick in my opinion.

The rest of the picks Reid doesn’t provide a reason for his selections.

138. Pittsburgh Steelers: Tyquan Thornton, WR, Baylor
208. Pittsburgh Steelers (via KC): Ellis Brooks, LB, Penn State
225. Pittsburgh Steelers (via NYJ): Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, EDGE, Notre Dame
241. Pittsburgh Steelers: Kyler McMichael, CB, North Carolina

He has the Steelers finally getting a receiver with Tyquan Thornton. Thornton is a popular name amongst Steelers fans. Thornton is tall at 6’3 and has blazing speed. The Steelers have had some good down the field threats, but no where near this type of speed in a long time. If you are thinking of Mike Wallace, Thornton would blow him out of the water in a race. He could potentially do the things that we thought Martavius Bryant was going to be able to do.

Reid finishes off his Steelers selctions with a linebacker, and edge rusher, and a cornerback. We’re still missing a safety. Maybe he’s assuming the Steelers will sign Tyrann Mathieu, or bring back Terrell Edmunds. Though maybe he didn’t because he doesn’t have the Steelers selecting a receiver until pick #138.
