The 2022 NFL Draft draws ever closer, and this year’s event promises to be even more exciting as the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to inch towards drafting the best player available vs. reaching for a positional need. We’ll head to Las Vegas, Nevada to Allegiant Stadium, home of the Raiders and host venue. It all begins on April 28th.

Round 1 takes place on Thursday, April 28 beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

Rounds 2 and 3 will be held on Friday, April 29 beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

Rounds 4 through 7 will be held on Saturday, April 30 beginning at 12 p.m. ET.

Draft order

The Jacksonville Jaguars are the current beneficiaries of the No. 1 pick, followed by the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans. The Steelers, however, will have to wait until pick number 20 in the first round to make their first selection.

Most Picks

The Jacksonville Jaguars and the Kansas City Chiefs are tied for the most selections with 12 apiece. While seven teams hold multiple picks in the all-important first round, including the Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets, New York Giants, Detroit Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles – who have three selections up their sleeves.

Pittsburgh Steelers Picks

Pittsburgh will have seven picks in the 2022 draft.

First Round – 20 (Overall 20)

Second Round – 20 (52)

Third Round – 20 (84)

Fourth Round – 33 (138)

Sixth Round – 29 (208

Seventh Round – 4 (225)

Seventh Round – 20 (241)

What do the Steelers need?

Pittsburgh’s 42–21 postseason defeat in the first round of the playoffs by the Kansas City Chiefs was no surprise. It was, however, the Steelers first consecutive playoff appearance since 2014-2017.

This season is the first time since 2003 that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not be on the roster and it’s reportedly general manager Kevin Colbert‘s last season with the team in his respective role. But some continuity is guaranteed with head coach Mike Tomlin gearing up for his 16th season in charge.

The AFC has seen plenty of trades and free agency deals this off-season, but the concern is that the Steelers have fallen further behind. That puts extra pressure on this franchise as the team continues to move forward.

So where do the Men of Steel need to reinforce?

Quarterback

There’s no hiding the huge Ben Roethlisberger sized hole on the roster, and it’s a gap that desperately needs filling. But the reality is that teams looking for a superstar QB in this year’s draft are likely to be disappointed.

Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins might develop, but it’s hard to see them as franchise leaders. With only the 20th pick in the first round, the Steelers will be lucky to pick up any of the top QB’s in the draft.

Liberty’s Malik Willis, Matt Corral from Ole Miss, and Nevada’s Carson Strong are the standouts. Whether Pittsburgh wants to commit everything to get one of these guys is another matter.

Wide receiver

Diontae Johnson had a great 2021 season and looks like a star of the future, but the same can’t be said for Chase Claypool who is still prone to mistakes. One of the top prospects in the draft is Ohio State’s Chris Olave, and he feels like a perfect fit.

If the Steelers can’t get him, they may opt for a mid-round pick instead. Don’t be surprised to see South Alabama talent, Jalen Tolbert, on their radar.

Either way, it’s imperative Pittsburgh finds a safe pair of hands for their new QB in Mitch Trubisky.

Offensive line

Let’s be honest, the offensive line still needs upgrading, even after an already aggressive off-season. Luckily, this year’s draft is full of offensive linemen with plenty of possible picks available in the first three rounds who would be big upgrades on the current roster.

Tyler Linderbaum at center looks special, while North Carolina State’s Ikem Ekwonu, Alabama’s Evan Neal and UCLA’s Sean Rhyan are all elite guys that have the potential to start right away.

Cornerback

Although Levi Wallace was signed and Ahkello Witherspoon was re-signed this off-season, Joe Haden’s future is uncertain. Drafting cornerbacks isn’t something Pittsburgh has historically been good at, so expect movement in the free agent market instead.

Defensive line

With Stephon Tuitt’s injury problems and only Cam Heyward proving his worth, the defensive line needs an upgrade. Top talents in this year’s draft are Georgia’s Jordan Davis, DeMarvin Leal and look out for North Carolina State’s Cory Durden.

Growth of the NFL

The NFL continues to grow in popularity, not just in the U.S., but all over the world. On top of the recent move to a 17-game season, NFL teams continue to play more matches in Europe, with London hosting regular season games.

This new worldwide fanbase is also discovering that betting on your favorite team is a great way to enhance their enjoyment of the sport. With so many markets and a wealth of stats to examine, there are plenty of markets to wager on. There are lots of UK online gambling operators that offer NFL betting options, including the latest odds on how teams like the Steelers will perform this year.

The 2022 season

With so much upheaval this off-season, plus an incoming new GM and QB for the Steelers, nobody expects a Super Bowl run. If Pittsburgh gets the draft right, fans expect another playoff berth at the very least, but the reality is, it may take another draft or two before we see the Steel Men going any further.
