Extremely good Washington post story on Haskins.

Sucks because I hated the move to bring him in and at least on the field it sounds like he may have really been ready to make a leap forward and prove me wrong… which id gladly be for an amazing redemption story… but it wasn’t to be…

How can we be sure a redemption story was in the works? He had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system and was driving. He also had a drug in his system. He was in the car with a woman who was not his wife whom he had recently married, if I recall correctly. I feel bad for the guy, but that is the makings of a redemption story?

I meant on the field… the off the field stuff is what literally killed any chance of the work he was putting in bearing fruit

I have nothing but sympathy for Haskin's wife and family, I seriously do, but after learning of the toxicology report it sounds like he still had issues. I for one don't want my QB 1 to have off the field problems. We lived with that when Ben had his issues and as great as Ben was here. that off field crap haunted him his entire career and it cost him major money as well. You never, ever saw Ben receive endorsements to pitch products on TV which was related to his off field issues. I know, he was never formally charged but the seed had been planted and Ben was hated for it.
Kenny is a breath of fresh air here in Pittsburgh and I think he will project well with his personality and his work ethic. Don't believe there will be any off field issues with Kenny. He's a mature 24 year old QB who shows me leadership skills and will be ready to take over much sooner than later.
Also, this is no indictment on Haskins! I just think he still had some issues and I'm so sorry that this happened to him. He didn't deserve what happened to him.

Just tragic. I used to be a more judgemental person and then had teenagers of my own. Humans are complex beings with lots of sides and masks. Like I tell the young men I coach and my own sons. You should make mistakes. They are the things you will learn the most from. But the ones that involve your safety or the safety of others cannot be made. Same with one's that involve the police.

The woman wasnt his wife?

It's true that we all learn from mistakes. They just don't all have to be your mistakes. We can learn from others'.

Really smart people learn from others but everyone has their own issue. I'm thinking Haskins had some really excellent qualities. But it sounds like his problems might have been equally bad. And he paid the ultimate price.

Very true but also remember we can't judge because we don't know their journey. That O'l saying "unless you've walked in the other man's shoes" comes to mind.

I definately hear yaz Djfan and appreciate all your insight along the way.

I see more the hockey end of this. But if anyone thinks people telling you are great from a too young of an age is good for you.......

It is sad to see this happen to anyone, even worse when it is someone who is given so much opportunities

He had plenty of other examples from history - recent and older - to know better. He chose. Super sad, but it is what it is.

tragic story for sure… the field is a place where dreams can come true but dreams have a cost.

Steelers going to honor his memory this year with a helmet decal

( sorry for the pft link)
