Got away from it for whatever reason and picked it up about 3/4 done. Right when it gets to the good stuff about the rise of the team, the SB etc. Found the book to be personally candid particularly about the difficult loss of his wife and falling in love with his second wife. Cowher is a class act and it's definitely not a tell all. I'd say if you are old enough to remember the Cowher era its a must read. But also if you want to get a perspective of a great leader it's useful. Put words to many principles I consider important in leadership and coaching.

What's the title?

"I'd Rather Lose in the AFC Championship than in the Wildcard Round.".
By Bill Cowher.

Subtitled, "But if and when I lose, I'm gonna rip SOMEBODY a new one."

You feel pretty proud to be a Steelers fan reading it and understand why Bill walked away. Maybe Tomlin should read a few times.

Cowher was my favorite coach, because of his personality. Possibly because I was older and appreciated the job he did more too.
Just opinion but hey that's what this board is for. I don't think Cowher and Tomlin are very different coaches in terms of motivating players and believing in the process, care for their players. I just think Cowher had a lot more chops from the breadth of his football experience.

Heart of steel sounds better
Absolutely. Heart Of Steel describes Cowher.

This would have been a great book cover photo.

Maybe.

Cowher is currently working on his new book titled ” Sideline perspective, Mediocre Mike”.

One thing about Coach Cowher, even in his “off years” you still felt he would be in it the next year. If he did make the playoffs, you felt like he had the team to make noise……..

I never felt like we were lucky to make a non-losing season and call it good.

And Mike Tomlin's book?
"Back To the Lab, or How to Make Sure You Have January and February Off!"
He should write a cookbook with his favorite recipes and things of that nature.

His book ratings would be 3 to a little over 3 stars.

In my opinion it was more like...... the down years were really down but they would be upswinging to the top 4. Not living in the top 1/3 -1/2

Excellent read. I read it when I caught Covid a year and a half ago. Loved the reads on Kordell and his progression with the OCs, and Cowher describing what it's like to call the offensive plays in a game and still coach. Short answer, you can't, and he never did it again.

Reading his book describes the nuances needed to be a coach, leader, public face, and politician, and decribes what it takes to be a Head Coach in the NFL. I know I can't do it. Tough job indeed.

I picked the book up after the start of this thread. I didn’t know it existed. So far I’m up to chapter 15 and I gotta tell ya, I think Tomlin should buy a copy of it and pay attention to the parts where he talked about his staff not being yes men and not interfering with their game calling unless it was needed. I can’t wait to finish it.

In my mind Tomlin doesn't come close to Cowher in terms of motivation. Cowher could have gotten guys to run through a brick wall for him. At times he would have even led the way.

Just like that time he almost clocked the kick returner in Jacksonville
