Fire Art Rooney II

When they chant that, it may get his attention. It's an abomination, hersey and time to change.

What will it take for the ownership to ever make the decision to fire this coaching staff ?

I just can't waste any more time complaining about performances or plays. The game planning, adjustments, decision making and actual coaching on this team is just non-existent, or lackadaisical, or just...bad. When comparing our coaching to that of other teams (or to the standard of other successful teams), we DON'T compare. This has been the norm for quite some time.

Our coaching is substandard and is limiting the success of this team as a whole. It has been for some time, years really. The TALENT of this team has created 'splash' plays to cover for the lack of actual coaching. Talent on this team has been squandered for years to cover the lack of coaching proficiency.

Has there EVER been a coach (especially a tenured coach) that has so consistently under performed against poor teams such as this ....and STILL kept their job ?

What is it actually going to take for the ownership to finally realize what a majority of fans know? The COACHING is the problem.

If it took them 3 years to realize Canada was out of his league…good God we might be waiting a while on Tomlin. Apparently Rooney is a little slow on the uptake.

They act like the streak finishing at .500 or better is meaningful. Who cares? The 4 seasons with a playoff win out of 16 (soon to be 17) or no playoff wins since the 2016-17 season is what should matter.

Kyle Shanahan is one of the top coaches in the NFL. He's had 3 losing seasons in 7 seasons. In his three playoff appearances, he has 6 wins and 1 Super Bowl apperance. He's on his way to a 4th playoff appearance and when healthy, he has the best team in the league this year. Does anyone care about those 3 losing seasons? Nope.

Philadelpia got rid of Andy Reid when he got stale. This is following 9 playoff appearances in 14 years, but 4 straight years without a playoff win. Reid went on to have success with Kansas City. Does Philadelphia care? Nope. They won a Super Bowl with Doug Pederson, got rid of him three years after that season, and then went to a Super Bowl with Nick Sirianni. They once again have one of the best teams in the NFC.

Green Bay got rid of Mike McCarthy after just over 12 seasons with two losing seasons in a row. Matt LaFleur won three straight division titles with three straight 13-win seasons. They stumbled a bit last year and started slow this season, but has Jordan Love starting to look like the real deal at quarterback.

All I know is we are about to go a 7th straight season without a playoff win, only have 1 division title since 2018 and only 1 double digit win season during that same span (unless they get another this year).

SteelerFan448 everything you point out is spot on.

I do believe there are times where player personnel on a team evolves that doesn't match the coaching philosophy of the staff that guides them. Or that coaching philosophy doesn't compete well against teams within their division. But for ours, I don't even see the evolution of any sort of philosophy. Honestly, I think that there is such a lackadaisical attitude towards game planning, player responsibility, teamwork, that a core just doesn't exist because of it. That attitude has permeated through to enough players that it makes it impossible for a team leader to even be effective.
Couple that with a stoic ownership that is willing to let doing nothing be represented as some sort of badge of stability.
Now that we have lost several key players in one fell swoop, that oftentimes create the 'splash' plays that change the outcome (or cover for the lack of coaching leadership) I anticipate a tremendous drop in performance in the coming weeks.

They should entertain Grudenesque offers from team ownerships enamored with HCMT. According to the narrative, there should be a bidding war. He'd be the perfect fit for LV and their dim ownership. They'd give him a $20M/10yr guaranteed contract and fire him in the middle of the second season. Serious entertainment. But get the damn value. Don't just fire him.

Great post

Can you imagine the team who created The Rooney Rule firing a Black Head Coach? It will never, NEVER EVER HAPPEN! Art Jr doesn't have the balls to FIRE TOMLIN!

I agree with this. Tomlin has never been a good XO coach, and he doesnt seem to let his assistants be good XO coaches either. Most of the year we have had free rushers coming in. They act like they never have seen a blitz before. On a key 3rd and 2 AZ had trip WRs on one side. One was left uncovered the D had 0 shot to stop that play based on just alignment. They kept throwing to the TE and walker was getting abused. Those things should be easy adjustments, but we do not do them.

How much longer is he going to make us suffer? Need new blood, new ideas. I think our HC thinks he can’t be fired. Get us some new blood.
Thinks? He KNOWS.

The Rooney rule backed this team into a corner.
You only get backed into a corner if you allow it to happen.

Nothing wrong with giving someone a chance, but keeping them around long after they have shown they are not up to the job is criminal.

100% correct...they will never fire .500..... it seems that they have no interest in winning, they only appear to want to be Politically Correct... what a smelly situation this has turned out to be.... pathetic and sad what this storied franchise has become

The reports that it was at Rooney’s directive that Canada got fired and not extending Tomlin prior to the season suggest that Tomlin is on the hot seat. How much is the question. Is a playoff appearance enough to keep his job? A playoff win?

I guess we will know soon because it appears there is no possible way this team gets a playoff win IF they are lucky enough to even make the playoffs.....

Dear Santa:

All I want for Christmas is for my beloved Steelers to finish at 8-9 or worse. Please.

A better draft position would be nice but that would just be bonus at this point.

The culture of this once proud, hard-working, blue collar team is now overrun with complacency and goals of medicoracy. A franchise who responds to a 9-8 season by bragging that their coach "has never had a losing season" shows just how low the current standard is the standard.

This team, this franchise, cannot make any forward progress as long as it is saddled with the boat anchor of "never had a losing season" while publicly embracing barely being a .500 team.

The Steelers are stuck in neutral. The car is slowly rolling backwards down the hill. And the people in the car are bragging that they still haven't crashed yet.

Good enough has become good enough in Pittsburgh. It's been that way for 30 years with the Pirates. It's been brewing for the past 5 years with the Penguins. Now the Steelers are on board.

The City of Champions of my youth is quickly becoming the City of Chumps.

Give me a losing season so a true, accurate and fair evaulation of the current state of this team can take place.
