First Step Act

Some of the federal sentencing seems pretty harsh. Probably ok with this.

I think we can all agree that **some** sentences are harsh for the crime committed. it's common sense, really, that a guy popped with weed shouldn't be doing a longer term than a dude who raped someone.

Ought to help out the prison over crowding situation.

Long overdue, but I thought Trump was for stiffer penalties, even death, in dealing with the opioid epidemic?

Senate passes criminal justice overhaul, handing President Trump a win

The Senate passed a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill on Tuesday night, handing a significant victory to President Trump and senators who lobbied to advance the legislation before the end of the year. Senators voted 87-12 on the legislation, which merges a House-passed prison reform bill aimed at reducing recidivism with a handful of changes to sentencing laws and mandatory minimum prison sentences.

Its passage is also a win for Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, who took on criminal justice reform as one of his primary policy goals and who has lobbied individual senators to back the bill for months.

They need to remove the federal criminalization of marijuana and retroactively apply it to everyone in jail now if that didnt involve guns or violence.

You aught to live in Alabama some of the worst drug laws in the nation. If you get busted three times in a row with just one joint, it is LIFE in prison. Hell if your third arrest is even for roach clip, it's life. ******* ridiculous

This is actual social justice reform.
While this should just be the start, it is good to see the Clinton-era drug sentences reduced.

Violent offenders need to be jailed. Folks just selling/possessing some weed, legal in many states, should not be incarcerated.

This is a huge racial issue. How many young caucasians are in federal prisons for weed related "crimes"?

This is a great first step!

It's unfortunate that its orders of magnitude easier to fly a bill for lighter sentences for criminals through Congress than sensible immigration legislation for lawful citizens.

Wow. There is a certain Darwinian lesson from you example, though.
