Football Life Bill Cowher

Have to wonder if Bill had stayed would there be more trophys in the case on Water Street.
We’ll never know but I have a feeling there would have been.
Hats off to you coach, you were what it meant to be a true Steeler. No bs, no fluff, just hard nose blue collar football.
I’ll toast a Jamison to coach Cowher this evening.

And Bill notnonly knew how to motivate players he knew how to trust them.

In an interview of Cowher’s once, he talked about being a coach.

He talked about always making the right decision for the team.

He went deep into that it meant that he couldn’t have friends. Friends would cloud the team decisions he needed to make. He had professional Curtesy, but not actual friends.

It was so refreshing to hear that part of the interview because it made so much sense to me, at the time.

Those questioning as whether we would have more lombardies had Coach Cowher stuck around, the answer is YES, of course we would have. Very easy and plainly to see. My guess is 2 pretty solidly, but possibly a 3rd also. (My $.58)

I have to agree with ya Drink. We’ll never know as I mentioned but I think we would have 2-3 more as well.
I’m so bummed these days with the team I grew up with it makes me sad to see **** like we see going on.
I don’t want to hear the standard is the standard bs any longer either. They’re just words!

I remember being mad at Cowher the season after the SB win.
He was a cardboard cutout with zero emotion.
I was glad he stepped away because I thought he checked out.
And he kinda did, but it was because his wife was dying, which I didn't find out until much later, and I feel awful to this day about it.

He seems happy and at peace with his decision, so I'm happy for him.
But as a coach, he knew that the OC and DC were the teachers of their system, and Cowher himself was the captain of the ship and motivator.
Cowher wasn't fearful of his coordinators, nor felt threatened by their expertise and knowledge.
He did trust them to put the players in the best position and likewise trusted the players to executed as called or audible if necessary.

And now we have this players coach that ALL the players call their friend and cool to play for because they all know they control him and that he has no real power.
Counting down the days until Art II and CoolShades are "not renewed".

I read (listened) to the Cowher audio book. It's a good read if you have the chance. There are still a few stories that I'll bring out once in awhile, and a couple of leadership philosophies that I use in real life.

I think biggest difference is Bill attracted quality assistants and they got their chances at the big chair. Tomlin’s guys get Nada. Therefore he us scraping the bottom of the barrel.
It's not so much that he attracted quality assistants as it is his overall leadership philosophy. He was self-aware enough to know what he was good at and what his weaknesses were. He hired assistants who were complementary to his gaps and let them do their job.

Thought for sure once his wife passed, he would get back into coaching.
He was done, done with Steeler fans interrupting his dinners when out, he was just so sick of the interruptions and that.

That isn’t why he stopped coaching. Steelers fans didn’t drive his decisions.

Cooch you forever will be one of the strangest Steelers fans. Making up dumb sh!t as you go along.

Probably! Thought the board would enjoy watching anyway.

In the late fall through early spring I always have pretty tough weather. It causes me to move indoors to get my steps either on the high end tread m ill or the high end rowing machine.

Durring use of those machines I commonly tune into YouTube and find old Steelers games / football life / anything Steelers oriented.

I never get tired of watching good Steeelers’ stuff, even this video I’ve probably watched 2-3 times in the last 6 months. Can’t get tired of this kind a stuff.

There really was such a thing as “Steelers Football”, sadly that has wondered off into a pudding filled meadow.

As I read the book it was before Kay got sick but they had built their dream home in NC and the girls were off to college or their lives. He was alone in Pittsburgh with his parents and he wasn't happy. That's what I remember from the book.

Perfect Coach after Noll retired. A real Pittsburger.

This generation growing up will only know the team as mediocre. They've regressed to the point they no longer stand out and have no brand. Well, other than staying exactly the same.
They only have a history that's getting pretty far away in that rear view mirror.

In 2006, there was obviously something bothering him. Yea, you often experience a "down season" after winning it all, that's nothing new. But there was something missing in 2006. You could tell. His wife being ill?
