Today we watched our Steelers shoot themselves in the foot all too often today for them to come out with the win. The Steelers snatched Victory from the JAWS of Defeat today! Losing the turnover battle and a bone-headed fake punt backed up in the shadow of your own goal line but somehow the Steelers were able to come away with the win! UNBELIEVABLE!

Steelers offense struggled at times but Russell Wilson shows you what a veteran presence can bring to a football team despite all the adversity leading them downfield late in the 4th Quarter to take the lead 28-27 on a beautiful throw to Mike Williams for the go ahead TD with just over 2 minutes to go! Defensively the Steelers struggled to with too may Defensive penalties that helped Washington move downfield and score points at the end of the first half and opening drive of the second half that really put the Steelers on the ropes. TJ Watt was held in check them entire game with only one pressure and he might have deflected a pass but it sure as hell wasn't for a lack of effort. He played his *** off! Minkah Fitzpatick and Demonte Kazee made a nice tackle on Zach Ertz to keep him just short of the line of gain with under 2 minutes to go giving the Steelers the ball. Patrick Queen was a force out there throughout the game I think he had 3 tackles for a loss if my memory serves me correctly. Nice to see Cam Heyward in there with 2 sacks of Daniels.

When we look back at the Steelers 2024 season this game vs Washington might be the game where you could say the Steelers turned the corner and became a legitimate NFL Contender because they were able to overcome all the mistakes, losing the turnover battle and come away with the win on the road against a really good Washington team. I'm sure the Steelers front office went crazy watching their 2 new signings in Preston Smith & Mike Williams paying immediate dividends this week. I'm excited to see what Williams can do once he gets comfortable in this offense. I hope Highsmith's injury is not serious because they will need him down the stretch but Preston Smith showed us a glimpse of what he can do. This was a good victory against perhaps our toughest opponent so far this season. The arrow is definitely pointing up. Let's enjoy this one for 24 hours and get ready for Ratbird Week!

Per Tomlin's Post Game:
Alex Highsmith - Ankle injury being evaluated wasn't able to return
Dionte Jackson -Hamstring injury unable to return

Game Balls:
Russell Wilson - He struggled in the first half but put together great drives in the 2nd half ending with the go ahead TD to Mike Williams. 14 for 28 195 yds 3TD's, 1 INT
George Pickens - 5 rec, 91 yds 1 TD.....I still wanna see him double digit targets every game. His body control is the best of any WR since Randy Moss
Patrick Queen - He had 3 tackles for a loss today, 7 tackles total....he was all over the field today. Hope he saved something for the Rats next week!
Cam Heyward - 2 sacks today and 1 batted ball.....the old man still has what it takes to be an impact player

Game Goats:
Joey Porter Jr - struggled against McLaurin in coverage today and was a penalty machine committing 3 or 4 costly penalties today.
Jaylen Warren - That fumble at the 1 yd line gets him on this list.....it doesn't get much uglier than that!
Broderick Jones - Struggled in pass protection all day but especially in the first half

FU's:
**** YOU Washington....this is payback for kicking our butts in 2020!

Game ball to our much maligned oline as an overall unit. They opened holes today and did a decent but not great job protecting Russ. Warren and Najee went for over 100 yards combined. Running the ball twice in a row from around the 10 yard line in the 3rd quarter and punching it in hasn’t happened in a long time.

Warren should have been blown down but yes.

Joey is not living up to it imo.
I am fine with Joey jr. He is in position on almost every play. Some of the calls are legit....some are not. In the end he is there to make plays. Only can hope he cleans up his game going forward weekly.

Welcome Mike Williams. have not seen anyone wearing 18 for the Steelers catch a TD like that perhaps ever.

Game balls- Coach Mike T. aggressive calls like we all have been asking for. some worked, some didnt.
Mccormick. 4th round luxury pick. That guy was born to be a Steeler. like an old school Steeler.
Jayden Daniels- not a Steeler but man what a talent. Redskins are super lucky to have a Franchise QB finally

Game Goats- Porter- do not really mind the aggressiveness. but the constant bitching about legit calls gets old.
rough game for the refs- they gotta see all the holds on TJ, and choose not to call.

FU- to the fans that ***** and ***** about Tomlin and the Steelers. you would think they we 0-9 right now.
Every single play cannot go for 1 team. there will be ups and downs throughout the game. Enjoy the game and quit bitching.

Love this analysis.

I actually watched the game at a Steelers bar today w/ @Pittsburgh Charlie and 'on the fake punt' - I know yinz went crazy when it happened but let's dissect the decision...

Two things that I saw, the play ABSOLUTELY caught the Commanders off guard but Killebrew under threw Pierre for the incompletion. Why does Berm still approve of this even though we tried it deep in our territory??? We're opening the entire playbook. Teams now will be 'on high alert' when they play us. No longer can they say "we know what they were going to do" after the game because the game plan is fluid and ever changing.

I don't care if we won by one point or 100 points - we're 7-2 *************!!!

A. I am fine with Joey being aggressive. He is at least there making plays...not five yards behind the WR.

B. I might fall into this area. I am critical of us doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I don't remember bitching about Tomlin this game but I know I have in the past. I feel we played bad on both sides of the ball today at times. We were able to get TDs today where in the past we only got Fgs. It obviously was the reason we won today. Russ played like crap today but they kept allowing him to wing the ball around. It paid off in the end. D did just enough for us to win....inches away from losing and winning. The refs made the right call on the Ertz catch in my opinion. A win is a win though. Props to the entire team for grinding out a win on the road!!!

Looked like Matt Canaduh was calling the plays in the first half. Several passes short of the first down marker.
Defense **** the bed in the 3rd quarter.
Harris ran like he was playing for a contract. Oh wait....
Make mistakes but played well enough to win.
Never a losing season, greatest coach everrrr....

Game Balls: Queen - had probably his best game as a Steeler
Heyward - Another very good game
Pickens - I dont think people talked about his TD catch enough. He was diving, had to twist his body and make the catch above his head, and he made it look easy.
Mike Williams - Basically came in for an injured CAIII and made the biggest play of the game in a do or die situation

Goats: Porter - 3 penalties and was not great in coverage a lot. I still think he will be a good corner, but needs to clean some things up
Tomlin - Some will disagree here, but the fake punt was a terrible call. You have a non-QB throwing to a non-WR on 4th and forever on your own 20 yard line while winning. It is just a very low percentage play when we did not really need it. Even if it was scouted on tape, does not mean we have to use it in the game or especially in that situation. We basically gave Wash a free TD. I wish we would have saved that play for the Ravens if needed.

FUs - An early FU to the Ravens

As we gave them a free TD basically they returned the favor on a ST fumble. Both parties had the luxury of a short field.

I think this team is winning games that they would have lost last year and I am stoked about that!

Game Balls-
Russ- showed Pittsburgh he has mettle as well as like Ted Lasso says- memory of a goldfish. Wasn’t his best game but he kept fighting and pushing. Rose to the challenge when it was time.
Mike Williams- welcome to the team.
Pickens- showed he can be scrappy like a junkyard dog. Russ is bringing the dog out of George and keeps him involved.
Queen-the Austin defense and his role may finally be starting to click for him. He was all over the place. Reminds me kind of what Cole Holcomb was when he came to the team. Shaky, showed flashes and then the defense/system finally clicked.
Cam Heyward- the guy is making an impact

Goats
JPJ- very hands on. Made me wish we had McClaren on our tram
Pierre-catch that pass and it’s to the house or at least a first down

Tomlin's team punts from their 15, Washington drives and scores: "Turtle ball!"
Tomlin's team executes brilliant fake punt from their 15, wide-open guy drops ball: "Stupid call!"

Okaaaaay ...

Except on 1st down...99.9% chance we are running it.🥴

In the first half, Wilson tried play action 3-4x on first down and the pass rush was so virulent that he either took a sack or threw it away. I suspect Smith believed that he needed to get some productive running plays to slow down the pass rush, and not coincidentally when Warren gashed the Commanders defense and Najee got some yards, Wilson had more time to throw.

great write up as usual.

James Pierre needs the goat horns for this one. An NFL ST player needs to make that catch, he missed several coverages and on the one play where he did break up the completion, his contact was early and it should have been a PI.
