Today we watched our Steelers shoot themselves in the foot all too often today for them to come out with the win. The Steelers snatched Victory from the JAWS of Defeat today! Losing the turnover battle and a bone-headed fake punt backed up in the shadow of your own goal line but somehow the Steelers were able to come away with the win! UNBELIEVABLE!
Steelers offense struggled at times but Russell Wilson shows you what a veteran presence can bring to a football team despite all the adversity leading them downfield late in the 4th Quarter to take the lead 28-27 on a beautiful throw to Mike Williams for the go ahead TD with just over 2 minutes to go! Defensively the Steelers struggled to with too may Defensive penalties that helped Washington move downfield and score points at the end of the first half and opening drive of the second half that really put the Steelers on the ropes. TJ Watt was held in check them entire game with only one pressure and he might have deflected a pass but it sure as hell wasn't for a lack of effort. He played his *** off! Minkah Fitzpatick and Demonte Kazee made a nice tackle on Zach Ertz to keep him just short of the line of gain with under 2 minutes to go giving the Steelers the ball. Patrick Queen was a force out there throughout the game I think he had 3 tackles for a loss if my memory serves me correctly. Nice to see Cam Heyward in there with 2 sacks of Daniels.
When we look back at the Steelers 2024 season this game vs Washington might be the game where you could say the Steelers turned the corner and became a legitimate NFL Contender because they were able to overcome all the mistakes, losing the turnover battle and come away with the win on the road against a really good Washington team. I'm sure the Steelers front office went crazy watching their 2 new signings in Preston Smith & Mike Williams paying immediate dividends this week. I'm excited to see what Williams can do once he gets comfortable in this offense. I hope Highsmith's injury is not serious because they will need him down the stretch but Preston Smith showed us a glimpse of what he can do. This was a good victory against perhaps our toughest opponent so far this season. The arrow is definitely pointing up. Let's enjoy this one for 24 hours and get ready for Ratbird Week!
Per Tomlin's Post Game:
Alex Highsmith - Ankle injury being evaluated wasn't able to return
Dionte Jackson -Hamstring injury unable to return
Game Balls:
Russell Wilson - He struggled in the first half but put together great drives in the 2nd half ending with the go ahead TD to Mike Williams. 14 for 28 195 yds 3TD's, 1 INT
George Pickens - 5 rec, 91 yds 1 TD.....I still wanna see him double digit targets every game. His body control is the best of any WR since Randy Moss
Patrick Queen - He had 3 tackles for a loss today, 7 tackles total....he was all over the field today. Hope he saved something for the Rats next week!
Cam Heyward - 2 sacks today and 1 batted ball.....the old man still has what it takes to be an impact player
Game Goats:
Joey Porter Jr - struggled against McLaurin in coverage today and was a penalty machine committing 3 or 4 costly penalties today.
Jaylen Warren - That fumble at the 1 yd line gets him on this list.....it doesn't get much uglier than that!
Broderick Jones - Struggled in pass protection all day but especially in the first half

**** YOU Washington....this is payback for kicking our butts in 2020!
