THE BASICS
Score: Pittsburgh Steelers 38, Washington Redskins 16
Location: FedExField -- Landover, Md. -- Attendance: 79,124
The Short Story: The Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0) opened the 2016 season by rolling to a 38-16 victory over the Washington Redskins (0-1) on Monday (Sept. 12) at FedExField in Landover, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Steelers' offense lived up to the hype in the opener, racking up 435 total net yards. The Steelers went 9-of-14 (64 percent) on third down, a perfect 2-for-2 on fourth down and 3-for-3 from the red zone.
• Pittsburgh's defense kept Washington out of the end zone until the 13:05 mark of the fourth quarter and limited the Redskins to just 55 net yards rushing. Washington converted just three of 10 third-down attempts.
• Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger finished 27-of-37 for 300 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
• Wide receiver Antonio Brown caught eight balls for 126 yards and two touchdowns.
• Running back DeAngelo Williams piled up 143 yards on 26 attempts and scored two touchdowns.
• Wide receiver Eli Rogers hauled in six passes for 59 yards and a touchdown.
• Linebacker Lawrence Timmons led Pittsburgh with eight total tackles -- including four solo stops. He also had a pass defensed.
• Linebacker Ryan Shazier totaled six tackles -- including five of the solo variety. He defensed two passes and picked another off.
• Kirk Cousins went 30-of-43 for 329 yards, but the Washington quarterback was picked off twice.
• Wide receiver DeSean Jackson grabbed six receptions for 102 yards.
• Tight end Jordan Reed had seven receptions for 64 yards.
• Running back Matt Jones was limited to just 24 yards on seven carries while Chris Thompson gained 23 yards on four touches. He scored the Redskins' lone touchdown.
• Linebacker Mason Foster piled up a game-high 14 total tackles -- including nine solo stops -- for Washington. Two of his tackles were for losses.
• Cornerback Bashaud Breeland tallied nine total tackles, six of which were solo stops. He also defensed a pass and picked off Roethlisberger.
• After the Steelers and the Redskins exchanged punts on their first drives of the game, Washington got on the board first on its second drive. On 2nd and 5 from their own 38, Cousins found Jackson for a gain of 31 yards to give the Redskins a first down at the Steelers' 31. Cousins and Jackson moved the sticks again for Washington, this time with a pass on 3rd and 2 that went for seven yards. Pittsburgh's defense forced the Redskins to settle for a 31-yard Dustin Hopkins' field goal, though.
• Disaster struck the Steelers on the ensuing possession as a Roethlisberger pass on 2nd and 10 from the Washington 46 bounced off of the hands of Rogers and into the hands of Breeland, who returned the interception to the Pittsburgh 37. Cousins hit wide receiver Jamison Crowder for a gain of 11 on first down, but a false start by center Kory Lichtensteiger helped stall the drive and once again forced Washington to settle for three points on a 40-yard field goal by Hopkins.
• Pittsburgh's offense roared to life on the next drive. After being sacked by Washington linebacker Ryan Kerrigan for a loss of 12 on first down, Roethlisberger hit Williams for a gain of 14 and Brown for a gain of 13 to move the sticks. Three-straight runs by Williams netted 14 yards and put the ball on the Washington 47. Roethlisberger then connected with tight end Jesse James for a gain of eight on 2nd and 7. Roethlisberger found James a yard short of the sticks on 3rd and 8. Head coach Mike Tomlin elected to go for it on 4th and 1 on the Washington 29, and it paid off with a 29-yard touchdown strike from Roethlisberger to Brown, helping to give the Steelers a lead they never relinquished.
• Pittsburgh increased its lead to 14-6 just before halftime as Roethlisberger engineered a 14-play, 67-yard drive that covered 5:52. Roethlisberger converted another 4th and 1, this one from the Washington 34 that resulted in a 19-yard completion to Rogers. Facing a 3rd and 4 at the Washington 9, Roethlisberger found James over the middle for a gain of six. After calling a timeout with 31 seconds left, Roethlisberger fired a strike into the end zone intended for wide receiver Sammie Coates. The ball ricocheted off the hands of Coates and, fortunately for Pittsburgh, into the arms of Rogers for a touchdown.
• The Steelers received the football to open the second half and marched 47 yards in eight plays and 3:42. The drive ended in a 46-yard field goal by kicker Chris Boswell to up Pittsburgh's lead to 17-6.
• Pittsburgh's defense produced its first takeaway of the season when a Cousins pass intended for Reed was picked off by Shazier. Roethlisberger and the offense took over from their own 25. On 2nd and 10, Roethlisberger fumbled the shotgun snap but managed to pick the ball up and then hit Coates down the sideline for a gain of 42 to the Washington 33. Three plays later, Roethlisberger threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Brown.
• With the score 24-6 in favor of the Steelers with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter, it appeared as though the rout was on. Washington answered with a nine-play drive that covered 52 yards and five minutes and ended with a 34-yard field goal by Hopkins.
• The Redskins forced the Steelers to go three-and-out and then put together a seven-play, 77-yard scoring drive that made it an eight-point game early in the fourth quarter. Cousins tossed a 19-yard pass to wide receiver Pierre Garcon on 2nd and 5 to put the ball on the Pittsburgh 37. Cousins then hit Crowder for a gain of 16 and tight end Vernon Davis for a gain of 20 to bring up a 1st and goal from the one. Thompson punched it on the next play to put Washington right back in the game.
• Pittsburgh's offense responded to the challenge like the championship contender it is expected to be. The Steelers drove 73 yards in 13 plays and 7:13. On 3rd and 13 from the Washington 41, Roethlisberger hit Coates for a gain of 14. Roethlisberger then found Brown for a gain of 21 on 2nd and 19, setting up a 15-yard touchdown scamper by Williams to push Pittsburgh's lead to 31-16.
• After Washington turned the ball over on downs at their own 45, Williams ran for a six-yard touchdown on a drive that saw him pick up 29 of Pittsburgh's 45 yards.
• Linebacker James Harrison iced the win for the Steelers when he intercepted a Cousins' pass in the end zone that was intended for Crowder with 18 seconds left.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
• The Steelers have now won six in a row against Washington.
• Pittsburgh is now 44-24 (.647) all-time on Monday Night Football.
• Roethlisberger's second touchdown pass to Brown gave him the distinction of being the first player in NFL history to complete 500 passes to three different teammates. The TD strike also moved him to 13th on the NFL's all-time passing TD list, passing Joe Montana.

QUOTABLE
Tomlin on the offense
"We're confident in that group. I know we were missing some pieces tonight, but we had `7.' And, when you got '7', you got the chance to put together performances like that."

UP NEXT
The first AFC North clash of the year promises to be an intense one as the Steelers host the Cincinnati Bengals (1-0) next Sunday (Sept. 18) at Heinz Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. The contest will be televised on CBS.

The Bengals opened 2016 by hanging on for a 23-22 win over the New York Jets on Sunday (Sept. 11) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Wide receiver A.J. Green totaled 12 receptions for 180 yards -- including 54-yard touchdown from quarterback Andy Dalton, who threw for 366 yards. A 47-yard Mike Nugent field goal with 58 seconds put Cincinnati up by one, then cornerback Josh Shaw sealed the win by intercepting Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in the waning seconds.

The Steelers and the Bengals split the regular season series in 2015, with Cincinnati coming away with a 16-10 win at Heinz Field on Nov. 1 and Pittsburgh earning a 33-20 victory at Paul Brown Stadium on Dec. 13. Pittsburgh took the rubber match in the AFC Wild Card Playoff on Jan. 9, 2016, with an 18-16 triumph in which tensions between the longtime rivals boiled over.
