Well so long Gerrit. I understand that this will be met with a ton of skepticism by Pirate fans and understandably so due to previous track record......but I'll be honest, I'm not as high on Gerrit as most Pirate fans. He has one hell of a fastball that he falls in love with and gets himself in trouble too much. Teams invariably catch up to it and start hitting homers off him. I don't think he will ever be truly "ace" material mostly because of his emotional make up. You can bank on the fact that as soon as he gives up a couple hits or a homer early in the game he falls apart mentally and never recovers. He's a fiery competitor but in his case, it works against him most of the time.

The Astros sent back Colin Moran, Joe Musgrove, Michael Feliz and Jason Martin.

Moran is 25 years old, their #5 prospect and will start at 3rd base next year for the Bucs. He was a .300+ hitter at AAA last year and ended up making his major league debut for the 'Stros late in the season. He was again hitting over .300 for them with a homer in a handful of games in the majors and then he unfortunately fouled a ball off his face and missed the rest of the season with a broken jaw. He has pretty good power and hit around 18 homers in AAA last year. He will be ready to start the year off in the majors and fill a big hole in the Pirates lineup at 3rd.

Musgrove is a 25 year old pitcher who spent the last 2 seasons on the Astros major league club. He started 15 games for the Astros last year and then got moved to the bullpen to work him out of a slump he got into. He excelled in the Houston bullpen with a 1.44 ERA. He could be a starter or reliever but I imagine the plan is for him to start. As a starter, he had a 4.06 ERA in 2016 and a 4.77 ERA in 2017. He actually got credited with a win during the World Series last year while pitching out of the pen.

Feliz is a 24 year old reliever who made 98 appearances for the Astros major league club over the past 2 years out of the bullpen. He is a flamethrower who can bring it with a high 90's fastball, but has some control issues at times. He struggled a good bit last year and his ERA was up there at 5.26. If Ray Serage can harness that wildness, you may have something there. He should start the year in the Pirates bullpen and will probably be given every opportunity to serve as the 8th inning set up man for Rivero.

Jason Martin was the Astros #15 prospect this year and is a Center fielder. He spent the year at their AA affiliate at 22 years old, which is pretty good. He hit .273 with 18 homers in the minors last year. Reportedly is a better offensive than defensive player at this point. My guess is that he will start out at AA Altoona and by mid season he will be taking over in CF for Austin Meadows at AAA Indianapolis when Meadows gets the call from the Pirates.

It will remain to be seen if it's another quantity over quality trade that doesn't work out for the Bucs. They got 4 intriguing guys, 3 of which should be on the Pirates opening day roster this year. Should be interesting. The other thing is that Cole was gone after 2 years. Rosenhaus would never have let him sign another contract in Pittsburgh.

EDIT: Boras not Rosenhaus. I'm a dope lol.

Felix is a reliever who made 98 appearances for the Astros major league club over the past 2 years. He throws in the high 90's but has some control issues. High upside. He will start the year in the Pirates bullpen.

Rosenhaus? Isn't he a Boras client? I knew when they drafted him, he would never sign beyond his free agent date. Boras never lets his clients do that.
As far as the trade, to me, Cole never quite lived up to the hype. The last two years, he produced like a number 3 starter, not an ace. How well the players we got back produce will tell the tale. The good thing is, 3 of them are already major leaguers, so we'll find out fairly quickly. I'll be much more pissed if they move McCutchen before the season. Let the season play out for now. If the team is terrible, move him at the trade deadline. If the team is seriously in the hunt for a playoff spot, you keep him.

I agree that Cole lets things get in his head too much. Hope one or two of these guys pan out.

I thought he was overrated. He was solid and had a lot of competitiveness, but i think that got in his way at times. He did not do great in big games. Some people say ther pitcher we received will be just as good as Cole was.

Cole has had his inconsistencies, but he is still one of the best pure pitching talents in the game who is under control for two more years at well below his market value.

It does not seem to be a sufficient return, given how many teams were interested.

LOL, yep. Even though Boras and Rosenhaus are different sports I get them mixed up because they are both colossal a holes. Thanks.

That's how I view it. There was also no urgency to trade Cole right now. I hope that this is a foundation to another 1-2 year run, because I know they won't commit beyond that, but I have my doubts.

Now mccutchen gets traded. Going for 50 wins this year woo

How many fans are going to pay good money to watch the Altoona Curve play at PNC Park for 81 games? Gonna be fun. At least, there will be fireworks and bobbleheads. Dumbasses.

It was inevitable. Not sure where all the surprise and outrage comes from with so many Pirates fans. If you've been watching at any point over the past 25 years, this is standard procedure. They are never ever going to try and financially compete with the big boys. They will field teams of prospects and fringe major leaguers. When they do develpo stars, they will have them for one contract and that's it. Rinse and repeat. Not saying I love it, but that's how it is. People act like they expect the Pirates to all of a sudden spend 250 million a year. Not happening.

This is all true and all, but still don't have to like it. It sucks to lose the face of the franchise. I'm actually happy for Cutch to go to a contender and have a chance for a ring.

Giants were pretty bad last year, so don't know what kind of contender they will be. Cutch may get to a contender when' he becomes a free agent.
