The Steelers secured the services of tackle Marcus Gilbert, signing him to a new six-year contract.

The Steelers secured their offensive line even further on Tuesday when they signed tackle Marcus Gilbert to a new six-year contract that will keep him in black and gold through the 2019 season.

“It means I am locked in hopefully as a Steeler for the rest of my career,” said Gilbert. “It’s a blessing to work for a great organization, the Rooney family, Kevin Colbert and Coach (Mike) Tomlin. Just to be around in Pittsburgh, where they show you so much love, I couldn’t be happier and in a better place.”

Gilbert, who was selected in the second-round of the 2011 NFL Draft, has started in 34 of the 35 regular season games he played with the Steelers, plus he started one preseason game.

He has continued to develop since his rookie year, when he made 13 starts and was the recipient of the Joe Greene Great Performance Award for the team’s outstanding rookie. As he has grown, he has seen the line grow and loves the potential they have.

“I’ve seen the growth on the offensive line, the guys I came in with,” said Gilbert. “The line is growing and we can become something special. That was one of my main focal points. To give everything I have to this organization means so much to me.”

In June the Steelers signed center Maurkice Pouncey through the 2019 season as well, keeping these former high school and University of Florida teammates together for a long time.

“Pouncey and I have been friends since high school,” said Gilbert. “It’s a blessing to have a brother in the same city, playing on the same team, you can’t ask for anything more. We have had our ups and downs and now we are Steelers for life.”

Good now that line is set, we expect results!

:)

Gilbert better buy Munchak a Rolex or something. In a few weeks he went from mediocre journeyman to solid starter with a long term deal.

Let's just hope he and Pouncey don't go out to celebrate.

Well I do hope he has settled down and started working hard. I'm sure he has and has developed some since last two years debacle.

Salute the nation

I thought Gilbert played well last year. I saw him not as a superstar but a solid starter.....

not sure how he was a journeyman, considering we drafted him and he's been with us the entire time... ANYWAY, ESPN has some financial stuff in their article here:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed right tackle Marcus Gilbert to a new six-year contract, locking up another player on their offensive line who had been in the final year of his deal.

The deal is worth up to $30.8 million, according to a league source, and includes a $7.65 million signing bonus.

Gilbert, the only Steelers offensive lineman to start every game last season, dropped 10 pounds in the offseason so he could move better. The 6-foot-6, 320-pounder solidified his hold on his starting job by standing out at training camp. His new deal puts Mike Adams' long-term future with the Steelers in question.

Adams, the Steelers' second-round draft pick in 2012, never mounted a challenge to Gilbert or starting left tackle Kelvin Beachum at camp, and he is battling Guy Whimper for the No. 3 job at offensive tackle.

Gilbert is the second player the Steelers have signed to a long-term contract since general manager Kevin Colbert said the organization was "open for business" until the start of the regular season.

Colbert said at the beginning of training camp that the Steelers were interested in re-signing Gilbert, outside linebacker Jason Worilds, cornerback Cortez Allen and kicker Shaun Suisham to new deals since all are starters who were going into the final year of their respective contracts.

The Steelers re-signed Suisham a couple of weeks ago, and they have until Sept. 7, when the regular season starts, to re-sign Worilds or Allen or both.

Gilbert, a second-round pick in 2011, has started 34 of 35 career games, and he is among the players the Steelers will build around up front. He is the second offensive lineman to sign an extension with the Steelers in the past two months.

The Steelers signed Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey to a five-year, $44 million contract in June, making the fifth-year veteran one of the highest-paid players at his position.

This is actually a very good deal for the Steelers, a starting RT for 5m a season, and that's not guaranteed. I like it.

I think the guy gets a bad rap. Yes he was lazy and a slacker but he's cleaned that up since and has grown into a solid starter that we got for a good price.

No complaining on here. No complaining on Twitter. Barely any attention compared to the Steelers re-signing Keisel. Must be a good deal.

his best year was his rookie season, last year he still had slow feet sometimes but if he truly was injured and that slowed him down then hats off to him.

6 years 31 M sounds about right, let's wait for the details but right now it looks pretty good for the team money wise.

Much better than him having a good season, not signing him, then having to pay him one of those high-money RFA deals ala Max Starks.

Gilbert has proven to be OK in pass protection, but he cannot run block for ****. For a right tackle, I do not understand the investment here.

They couldn't sign Leon Searcy back in the day, but this guy gets paid. Whatever.

Signing mediocre to bad players to long term deals is never a good thing.

Gilbert is a full on lazy fatass the kind our front seems to love because they sure draft enough of them... They pay this fatass but played hardball with a hofer faneca which caused us a Super Bowl... Look at film of bens pick six. Fatass Gilbert should be playing for his job he suks.

Credit the contract year if you want, but Gilbert is easily in the best shape of his career. Far from lazy.

it would be it "cost" us, not caused us. I'm seeing one lazy person, and it's not Gilbert. If you knew anything, you would know it didn't matter what we would have paid Faneca, he wasn't happy that Grim didn't get the HC job, he hated the OL coach and refused to do what he said. And if you remembered anything, he was nothing when he went to the Jets. While Kemo sucked the big one, Faneca wasn't staying in Pittsburgh no matter what.

His first 3 years in the league, fat, sloppy and lazy. Gets to contract year and voila he is in shape. This act is repeated all around the NFL and teams that pay for a contract year usually get burned.

hopefully he is a lean 320 or less, when we drafted him he was a fat 330+

Actually it's been reported that he IS at 320. Lost weight to move better in the zone blocking scheme I believe at the suggestion of Munch.

How much?

I didn't see that in there

Yeah I cant say I dislike the deal... if he becomes the starter they think he can be then we get a bargin basement deal for a quality starter... if he stays mediocre... cutting him even next year would only cost less than 4 million. lets face it... 5 million isn't going to be much even in two or three years comparatively...

How about we put this into perspective. In 2011, we signed Willie Colon to a 5 year $29m deal, Colon was 29 at the time. This was after spending the previous year on IR. We just locked up a better RT who didn't miss a game last season, and is only 26 for LESS.
