Syria ready to work with U.N. to fight terror

U.S. considers containing ISIS in Syria

(CNN) - The Syrian regime says it's ready to accept support from the United States and others working under the U.N. umbrella to fight "terrorists."

The comments, by Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem, were made Monday as ISIS fighters seized control of a strategically important air base in the country.

The war-racked nation has been losing control of the northeastern region to ISIS militants.

Moallem, however, warned against any unilateral action or strikes in Syrian territory without permission.

"Any effort to fight terrorism should be done in coordination with Syrian government," Moallem said.

The U.S. military and intelligence communities are gathering intelligence on the locations of ISIS leadership and its troops in Syria, two U.S. officials told CNN on Friday. The information could be used in the coming days if President Barack Obama were to authorize airstrikes against the militants in Syria.

Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said on Monday, while speaking in general terms, that in order to conduct operations over Syria "you certainly want to get as much of a view on the ground as you can. You want as much situational awareness as you can."

"Satellites can provide you good visibility, but you always want closer eyes on target if you can," Kirby added.

Obama has authorized reconnaissance flights over Syria, which could begin at any point, a U.S. official told CNN on Monday.

When asked by CNN's Wolf Blitzer about how much coordination the United States would need to do with Syria to strike ISIS, Kirby said, "Not getting into the hypothetical operations, there's no intention to coordinate with Syrian authorities."

On second thought, the freedom fighters are worse than him. Now he needs our help.

This JV team is pretty good... lets hope they don't unleash the varsity team on us...

When you combine how he has divided the country and Congress with how awful his foreign policy has been with the failure of his healthcare system, is there any doubt of where his presidency is going to rank? Has there been anyone that has been less productive? He makes fun of people who bring up risks like ISIS and Russia and then deflects blame when it becomes reality.

Reagan's strategy neutralized a potential threat, Bamster's naivete created one. Yeah, I can see how they are the same.

Syrian al Qaeda-linked militants seize Golan Heights border crossing with Israel

Majdal Shams, Golan Heights (CNN) -- Rebels aided by al Qaeda-linked militants seized control of the only border crossing between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Wednesday.

The capture of the Quneitra crossing by Syrian rebels, including members of the al Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front, represents a new dynamic in a war long feared not only for its deadly effects inside Syria but for threatening to widen into a destabilizing regional conflict.

47 UN peacekeepers 'abducted by al-Qaeda linked Syrian rebels'

Syrian militants have reportedly captured more than 40 United Nations peacekeepers during skirmishes on the Israeli border.

Forty-seven soldiers from the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) are understood to have been abducted during clashes in the Golan Heights area between Syrian government forces and militants fighting with the Al-Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda linked group.

Details of the abduction, which took place during fighting on Thursday, remain unclear but it is understood that some of the troops who have been kidnapped include soldiers from the Philippines.

Russian armored columns said to capture key Ukrainian town

KIEV, Ukraine — Russian forces in two armored columns captured a key southeastern coastal town near the Russian border Thursday after Ukrainian forces retreated in the face of superior firepower, a Ukrainian military spokesman said.

The two Russian columns, including tanks and armored fighting vehicles, entered the town of Novoazovsk on the Sea of Azov after a battle in which Ukrainian army positions came under fire from Grad rockets launched from Russian territory, according to the spokesman, Col. Andriy Lysenko.

Russian media report 'invasion of Ukraine'

Reports that Russian troops are intervening directly in the fighting in south-east Ukraine have started to appear in Russian media, despite repeated denials from the Kremlin.

Newspapers and websites are quoting mainly Ukrainian and Western media reports about a Russian invasion, but some have also started to ask whether Moscow is now "fighting a war".
