Ben Roethlisberger reveals his team MVP vote

It's the same every year. He votes for tight end Heath Miller for things not necessarily associated with running and catching.

Post Gazette columnist Ron Cook recently got the ear of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in regards to the team's MVP vote - which is expected to come today, and has become perhaps the most anticipated team MVP announcement in a long time.

It shouldn't be any more intriguing for Roethlisberger, who's one of several worthy candidates on this year's team. It's the same thing every year, according to Ben.

As he told Cook, "I vote for Heath Miller every year."

Simple enough. It isn't just a rubber stamp he can apply to something about which he has little concern. Roethlisberger would explain to Cook, in what comes off as an amusing anecdote for as truthful as Roethlisberger intends it to be, "He never complains about a thing. We’re pulling him in his 10th year against Tamba Hali and these other linebackers and (Terrell) Suggs, and you never hear a thing from him … I’ll be like, ‘Heath, were you open on that play?’ He’ll go, ‘Ah, it was close.’ Then, I’ll look at the picture, and there was no one around him."

Miller is a worthy candidate, as is Roethlisberger himself. Ben has thrown for a career and franchise-high 384 completions for a career and franchise-record 4,635 yards. With one game to go this season, he's got the 5,000 yard mark still within his sights. Not that such things matter a whole lot to Roethlisberger, who may end up getting some attention for the league's MVP award as well. He's voting for Miller anyway.

He said he also votes for Miller for team captain every year too.

Miller was voted the team's MVP in 2012, his finest statistical season (71 catches, 816 yards, eight touchdowns). He can equal those totals with an eight-catch, 96 yard performance against the Bengals Sunday. That seems a bit lofty of an expectation for his production, but all it means is Miller is coming very close to a career year in his own right. Catching 63 passes and 720 yards this season is excellent for Miller, and he'll still play one more game.

The Steelers' MVP is expected to be announced at some point Tuesday.

Heath is the most underrated TE I can remember, not by Steelers fans but the league and media. He easily was top 5 TE throughout his career even if he didn't have the receiving stats, because he was the best all around TE for the last 10 years since he got in the league. He should be one of the favorite and remembered Steelers of all time, since Heath has been in the league there wasn't a TE I would have traded him for no matter what stats they were putting up.

Heath = all-time Steeler great..everything u could want in a player on your team..

Heath just flat out makes plays. Period.

It's a 2 horse race this season men...

I count 4.

Berger

Big Money

Bell

Brown.

Any one of those guys is worthy of MVP. I remember Mark Bruener. All too well. So I love me some Big Money. But truthfully, it's a crowded field on offense because so many guys played well.

Heath doesn't get the accolades because he doesn't put up big numbers but he is probably the best all around TE in the league and has been for years.

still cracks me up that one of our posters quit the board when Heath was drafted....of course the douche showed back up when the team was rolling......

Who did he want instead?

I personally jumped up in the air when his name was called. After 9 seasons of Bruener's lumbering ineptitude I was ecstatic to see a guy with seam striking ability.

Mark Bruener was garbage, and useless in the passing game. He was a small OT wearing the wrong number.
We will differ you have a nice day.

Houston TexansTight End
2008 2007 2006 2005 2004
Career with the Texans: 15 rec, 136 yds, 2 TD

Pittsburgh SteelersTight End
2003 2002 2001 2000 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995
1997 Pro Bowl Alternate --- Career with the Steelers: 137 rec, 1,197 yds, 16 TD

The guy sure played for a long time for being hot garbage, looks like nearly twice as long as the average career. The guy did exactly what was asked of him and played on some teams that had very poor quarterback play. He is still with the team and is part of the scouting department. I wish all the 1st round picks were as good as Mark Bruener.

Are you ******** me? 137 receptions in NINE ******* SEASONS? That's "very good"? Jason Witten had 110 catches in ONE SEASON!

Bruener = garbage.

I call BS on your comparison. Bruner played on a teams that were easily 60% plus run. Those teams were built around The Bus and featured such memorable names at QB as Jim Miller and Kent Grahm. Whitten has played his career on (until this year) mostly passing teams during an era of rediculously changed rules FAVORING the passing game. Bruener was an outstanding blocker and very good, possesion type reciever.

Heath is a tradtional tight end. Guys like Gronk are great, but are basically supersized wideouts.

Mark Bruner was a very good tight end. Heath Miller was even better.

THIS^^^^

The steelers never really used a tightend for passing very much. It's just the way it was. All this change to studs like gronkowski happened after Tony Gonzales.

I remember when we drafted Heath,, I thought it was a wasted pick because we didn't even pass to the tight end much at the time..

Heath,One of my all time favorites. Remember how great Eric Green was for a bit. I forgot that he was also a first rounder. But he was all about "show me the money" holding out a couple of times. He had over 900 yards one year ,with I think Bubby Brister throwing the pigskin. When he left the steelers for Miami he received the highest contract for a tight end in the history of the NFL

Maybe you do not remember the era prior to the fantasy games? Not all tight ends were used as wide outs and the ability to block is a tremendous thing, just not as flashy as catching passes. Some of the few passes he caught turned out to be big plays for the team. However if you are a fan of Whitten you might be on the wrong message board.

Calling Bruener garbage when he was one of the best blocking TEs in franchise history?

SMH

Oh and,,,

I watched every game he played in. We had a QB that could not throw, receivers that could not get open and a TE that could not catch worth a damn. It was painful to watch. Bettis carried this team until we finally wised up and shored up those holes. Notice that Superbowl team did not include such names as Stewart, Hawkins, Blackwell, Edwards or Bruener.

A starting tight end that only blocks is utterly useless in the modern game. Bruener's contemporaries were guys like Sharpe and Gonzales, so your argument that this is a new phenomenon is wholly without merit.

That was not how the steelers played when he was on the team so it seems that my point does have merit. I never claimed it was new just that it was not what the steelers did while he was on the team. Have a nice day.

Wing and I have had some disagreements where we didn't see eye to eye. This ain't one of 'em. Bruener was a good TE for what he was asked to do; mostly block and be an occasional possession receiver. Heath is a better all-around TE because of his receiving ability. Their roles on their respective versions of the Steelers were different and one need not denigrate Bruener for doing what he was asked/told to do in an era when TEs weren't asked to be focal points of their offense. Bruener was a good blocking TE. Heath is an even better all-around TE.

Going to obviously side with Wing on this. Comparing Tony and Sharpe (Sterling or Shannon?) to Bruener? Seriously? Neither of those players could block period. They were chip players with 1st and 2nd read progressions. Different scheme players. Bruener was a blocking TE first on a run first team, BEFORE Bettis. Kind of hard to call him garbage when Cowher said he was one of the most selfless players he ever coached. This coming from a Special Teams/DC who had Carnell Lake and Kirk playing all over the place on D. However, if you read only statistics then you are missing half the game.
