With the benefit of time to cool down and whatever perspective that gives me, here is what I like to think I would have said if I were the President of the United States after that ******* ran his car into the crowd -

Today, Heather Heyer was killed while she was exercising her right to peaceably protest, by another American. 19 others were injured by this same man. He ran his car into them all. Before I comment on motives, I need to make something clear. Whoever takes violent action against peaceful protesters in America will be prosecuted at a federal level, and we will have a presence at any events where we can anticipate this problem.

Now, with respect to motive. It is not surprising that a neo-nazi, white power, whatever demonstration would attract counter protesters. I would hope so. These skinheads or whatever are repugnant to our society. I am concerned that the mayor and governor did not call us in to support law and order for this thing, because anyone could see trouble brewing a mile away. We've learned our lesson, and will at this point have to take that choice away from local law enforcement. We will have the National Guard present at every planned event like this, and there will be no firearms allowed, no masks allowed, clear boundaries between the protesting groups, and plenty of capacity to take arrests into custody.

Lets remember that we are all Americans. Also remember that as President, I am sensitized to this particular class of crime, and if you break one of these laws, you will go to directly to a federal prison. You do not want to be on the wrong side of a law that has the attention of the President of the United States.

This should have been in line of another thread.. go ahead and move it please..

He should have stressed the point that there was no vandalism and no violence UNTIL Black Lives Mater showed up.

Today we witnessed senseless violence and hatred. There were white supremacists marching on Charlottesville. There were people opposing them. A full investigation has been ordered and the justice department will remain involved in the event that federal civil rights laws were violated. Done.

Everyone is trying to construct the perfect response after the fact. Unfortunately, you fail to understand that the President could've thrown himself in front of that vehicle as it sped into the crowd and the left and the lying press still would've called it 'too little, too late'. He should've just done what Obama did when Americans were getting their heads cut off, and just gone out and played a round of golf.

What I saw in Charlottesville was a bunch of piece of **** racists on one side, and a bunch of piece of **** fascists on the other. The battle between the two was tantamount to watching a self-cleaning oven in operation. Both were violent, both are repugnant, and the country would be a better place if both sides didn't exist in it.

While its my opinion that white supremacists/Nazi sympathizers are the more repugnant of the two groups, its also my opinion that the alt-left fascists are more dangerous to the wellbeing of our country. No one can tell me what to think about, or how to treat other people of different races, religions, gender, etc. So these clowns can march and chant all they f'n please, and I'll go about living my life according to my own values. **** them.

But alt-left fascists want a government take over, they're demanding a socialist/communist form of government, and its already taken hold in some states like Oregon, Washington, and California.... If they ever achieve such a thing, through government they will have the power seize wages, property, restrict liberty, punish nonconforming thinkers. It wouldn't be up to me anymore to live my life the way I choose. They could decide that I make too much money, and take most of it. They could decide that someone else deserves my job more than I do because of something that occurred 150 years ago. Many of these asshats believe Bernie Sanders was too conservative.

I think of it this way: for as repugnant as white supremacists/Nazi sympathizers are, they have existed in Britain, Germany, and even here for many years and have had little to no effect on daily activities or quality of life. But look at the places where socialism/communism have existed.... look at Venezuela today.

I would take the white supremacist pimple on my *** over the systemic cancer of communism any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

This was a very simple response that was needed. You denounce the white supremacists and neo-Nazis. You denounce anyone in any group who commits violence or threatens violence. I believe that is what he was trying to do, however he sucks at it. He just absolutely sucks at communicating. It came across as "Some of the Nazis are actually great guys."

You can't give that low hanging fruit to the media. And he does it over and over and over again.

As inarticulate as W was, he at least knew when to keep quiet and not lash out like a 13 year old girl every time someone poked at him.

good post, oftb!

His first response was almost enough, but it wasn't detailed enough. Maybe too vague, but I knew what he was trying to say. Not to offend 3rd graders, but that how he talks. Like an uneducated child. He was correct in saying that both sides are to blame because you can't have a fight without an opponent. Why is that wrong to say? Both sides need to chill the F out. You can't go to a protest/rally/march with weapons and expect a peaceful outcome. Tensions rise and people get antsy. We need more positive communication and dialog, but it is seems too late for that. No one wants to back down and things will continue to escalate until there is real bloodshed. Charlottesville may be tame to what could be around the corner. Screw any group that wants to use hate, intimation, fear and violence to get their message across.
