I didn’t want to start another new thread, so I am putting this here…. Elijah Riley is a Safety, not a CB… sure he plays slot.. so did Norwood… but there were both backup Safeties as well…
I only feel the need to point this out, because some dim media types are currently pushing the “the Steelers have 7 CBs so they need to trade someone” angle…
So let me explain, in the vague hope that maybe it gets back to them and maybe it seeps through their skull why this isn’t a big deal
1 the team has 6 CBs, 5 Safeties and 4 Ilbs… but the reality is that is really broken down into players that can play:
Outside CB
Slot CB
Free Safety
Strong Safety
Will Ilb
Mike Ilb
Special teams coverage.
Players can have positional flexibility as Tomlin calls it.
So like last year we had Sutton, who could play inside and outside cb and Norwood who could play either safety position and slot cb… most notably we had Marcus Allen who could play Will or strong safety, but was primarily there for special teams… all of these guys have been replaced…
Riely is taking the Norwood roles… Peterson and King will both be used like sutton… and that is the key change here… they don’t really need that hybrid safety linebacker role that Marcus allen was doing, which is why they cut Tanner Muse…
They can swivel either safety to the line as a ilb type and push patpete into coverage as a safety
The real change is that they are keeping one fewer special teams ace… which means that for now, at least, Pierres job as a ST coverage guy is very safe… and trading or signing a 10th olineman or illogically another DB that doesn’t play special teams is just not happening
