Thought this should have been challenged and it peeves me that referees continue to blow plays dead on potential turnovers when there is AUTOMATIC replay on every turnover. Let the play go and they can get it right via replay.

The whistles would have been moot on a replay since there was a clear reviewable recovery by the Steelers. But yes, Refs need to swallow those whistles at times.

I'm most pissed because we were to have hired someone this offseason to help us with these calls. This is 2 games in a row where the proper replay interpretation would have given us extra possessions. That is why you use challenges, to try and get an extra possession.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but did Buffalo not punt on the very next play? We may have gotten better field position, but it's not like we would have gotten an "extra possession" by challenging.

We would have had possession on their side of the field. That gives us a much higher percentage of a scoring chance even if it was just a FG.

I don't disagree that we should have challenged, assuming it hadn't been blown dead and actually could have been challenged, but the premise that we would have gotten an extra possession, assuming that's the primary argument, is a bit ridiculous.

The blown dead does not apply to turnovers, unless the play was blown dead before Sutton hit his hand. Steelers clearly recovered and it would have been awarded to them if it was reviewed.

There was a clear recovery on the play. It was absolutely worthy of a challenge. Get the ball somewhere around the 40 yard line and only need 10-15 yards for good FG range for Boz. We weren't guaranteed a TD but I'd like to think on a short field our odds are much better. Stuff like that boosts our offense.

They blew the whistles before anyone recovered the ball... so who recovered after that did not matter and the play could not be challenged.

The refs should have let the play finish out and sort out if there was a turnover afterwards. This way if the refs say it was incomplete then the Steelers could have challenged (since they did recover the ball).

BTW the Bills did punt on the next play and we got the ball at our own 20 yard line, but with the fumble we would have had it at the Bills 39 yard line. ( 41 yard difference)

I guess I'll reply with this, again. I don't disagree that we should have challenged, assuming it hadn't been blown dead and actually could have been challenged, but the premise that we would have gotten an extra possession, assuming that's the primary argument, is a bit ridiculous.

That isn't how the rule works anymore. They changed it 3 years ago. Whistles do not stop the recovery on a challenged turnover as they did in the past. The only thing needed is replay of a clear recovery, which the Steelers had.

Really? I never heard they changed that. I guess players can’t play until the whistle anymore, but most players stop when the whistle blows. Odd rule change.

Yeah, it's only on turnover recoveries. It stopped the Refs from being such an influence on dead whistles completely ending the chance at a turnover.
