Cool to see him get an opportunity. He's spent a season coaching with the Jets? Would be a huge leap, so soon.

The Texans confirmed their interview with Ward in a subsequent Twitter post. It would be an out-of-nowhere hire if Ward -- who spent 14 years with the Steelers -- landed Houston's head coaching gig. 45-year-old Ward's coaching résumé is essentially nonexistent. The Jets hired Ward as an offensive assistant in 2019; in 2021, Ward was hired by Florida Atlantic as a special teams assistant. For a franchise that stunned the NFL world with its 2021 hire of now-fired head coach David Culley, hiring Ward would be business as usual.

Just saw this. Love the guy. Not sure if he is ready for the big show, but God bless him.

I would take him, and the Titans can have Tomlin?

Better qualified to coach in the NFL than MT was.

Really? 🤷‍♂️

Tomlin was wide receiver coach at Virginia Military Institute for a year in 1995, spent the 1996 season as a graduate assistant at the University of Memphis, where he worked with the defensive backs and special teams. Following a brief stint on the University of Tennessee, Tomlin was hired by Arkansas State University in 1997 to coach its defensive backs. Tomlin stayed there for two seasons, before being hired as defensive backs coach by the University of Cincinnati. Tomlin was hired as the defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001, In 2002 and 2005, the Buccaneers led the NFL in total defense (fewest yards allowed per game). During Tomlin's tenure, the defense never ranked worse than sixth overall. When the Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII, the team recorded a Super Bowl-record five interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns. Tomlin was selected by Vikings' head coach Brad Childress to be his defensive coordinator in 2006.

That, compared to Hines Ward spending a single season as a WR coach. But he's more qualified? I get the Tomlin hate, but come on.

Gee-wiz, look at all of his success with Hall of Famers littered all over his teams.

Also, Tomlin never sniffed the NFL as a player, which counts for quite a bit on Ward's resume.

Why the need to drag Tomlin when discussing the possible coaching career ahead of Hines Ward? What is it with you, folks? Your Tomlin hate is gonna give you an aneurysm. 😐

Wouldn't have happened without your comment trying to ****-slurp him?

warrior made a comment in reference to others saying he wasn't qualified and I liked it.

Tomlin was wide receiver coach at Virginia Military Institute A POWERHOUSE PROGRAM for a year in 1995, spent the 1996 season as a graduate assistant at the University of Memphis, where he worked with the defensive backs and special teams. Following a brief stint on the University of Tennessee, Tomlin was hired by Arkansas State University ASU, NOT ARKANSAS, ASU in 1997 to coach its defensive backs. Tomlin stayed there for two seasons, before being hired as defensive backs coach by the University of Cincinnati BACK WHEN CINCI WAS NOTHING. Tomlin was hired as the defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001, In 2002 and 2005, the Buccaneers led the NFL in total defense (fewest yards allowed per game). During Tomlin's tenure, the defense never ranked worse than sixth overall.DUE TO KIFFIN BEING DC, NOT BECAUSE OF MT When the Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII, the team recorded a Super Bowl-record five interceptions,SINCE THE FAIDERS RAN ESSENTIALLY THE SAME OFFENSE AS THE YEAR BEFORE AND GRUDEN KNEW IT INSIDE OUT.. RAIDERS MAY AS WELL OF MAILED THEIR PLAYBOOK TO THE BUCS. LYNCH AND OTHERS KNEW WHAT THE RAIDERS WERE GONNA RUN AS SOON AS THEY CALLED THE PLAY. PRETTY ****** EASY TO GET 5 INTS WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT THE PLAY WAS GONNA BE three of which were returned for touchdowns. Tomlin was selected by Vikings' head coach Brad Childress to be his defensive coordinator in 2006.

Love Hines Ward the player, he hasn't proven enough for me to jump on board for him to be HC of the STEELERS yet. Watch and see what he does and just maybe in 2-3 years we will have an opening.!

This team needs a coaching enema.

Start by getting rid of Canada on Monday, give Hines the OC job, and then, voila, after one year he'll have the same amount of NFL coordinating experience that Tomlin had. I'd give a guy who actually played 217 games at wide receiver in the NFL and a season playing quarterback at Georgia some credence when it comes to understanding offense.

What the **** did Matt Canada ever accomplish before he got hired by the Steelers, besides bouncing around to and from 8 different colleges for the prior 25 years? Gee, I wonder why the clown never lasted very long in one location. Honestly, could Ward be any worse?

That guy Canada replaced was pretty bad too. Could Hines be worse sure. Better maybe. Not sure I want to take on that experiment. I prefer them to upgrade their experience at OC. One of these former HCs -recent fired HCs with significant O background would be my preference. We know we aren't getting a HC upgrade so that is where we stand. If Butler goes ditto. We need great X and O coaching at the coordinator positions. That is the only away to offset what we aren't getting at the HC position. The bigger underlying problem is Tombert which one is making those signing off decisions? We know both contribute. But one has to have the final say. And that guy isn't going to improve. Green, Harvin, Buggs, and a plethora of mediocre free agent decisions make me lean on that way of thinking. If that doesn't change the team will continue to be handcuffed.

How so?

This offense is 30th in the league in rushing yards, and rushing yards per attempt. They are 29th in the league in yards per pass attempt. They have scored a grand total of 37 points in the first quarter, which indicates that the plays scripted out of the gate by the coordinator have been an abject failure. Shall I go on?

I'd love to see a change at the top, but as we all know, that isn't happening. They are completely wasting their time with Canada, in my opinion. Hiring Hines would allow him to get the coordinating experience he needs, and serve as a gateway to the future. Tomlin won't be coaching the Steelers forever. At least I hope not.

You are stating where the O is at. Nobody is debating they should stay with Canada. What you failed to prove is why besides liking Hines that he would be a good OC. Yeah learning on the job worked well for so many other coaches under Tomlin. Not sure why you think an experiment will be better than a proven commodity. By the way a learning on the job type would be more in line with a yes man when Tomlin put his two cents in or not? What makes you think Hines has the X and O what it takes - knowledge to succeed at OC? Having his jersey hanging in your closet might not be enough to hire him.

Nothing more than checking the minority interviewed box.

Believe I already mentioned that Hines played over 200 games at wide receiver in the NFL, and also had a full season as a quarterback at a major division I school, so that experience would have provided him with a baseline of knowledge for a coordinating position. Guess you forgot to read that part.

What "proven commodity" is going to come to Pittsburgh and wallow under Tomlin? Enlighten me.

Love Hines. Hope he gets a chance one day I'd that is what he wants to do.
I just don't see it happening right now.

Oh silly me all those games at WR is going to make him a good X and O OC. Oh the little time at QB will cement it. You can point it out as many times as you like it is a silly concept each and every time. I told you what they need to do, not what they will do. That is the FO job to solve how to get them in the door. I tell you at this point Hines isn't it. Hell they wouldn't even hire him as a WR coach when given the opportunity and you think they will hire him as a OC. What a silly rabbit.

The box was already checked: Brian Flores was the first person they interviewed.

That just changed actually:

"In 2021, the NFL approved changes requiring every team to interview at least two external minority candidates for open head coaching positions and at least one external minority candidate for a coordinator job. Additionally, at least one minority and/or female candidate must be interviewed for senior level positions (e.g., club president and senior executives)."

That being said, Flores was likely a legit interview. There is just no way Hines is ready yet. Definitely reads of a "checking the Rooney Rule box" interview, which is unfortunate.

A Korean head coach in the NFL !!!!

That would make my vagina from China wife who is actually Korean very pleased!!

But seriously, I'd be happy for him but jealous. I wish he'd be the HC here.

I hope Hines get a shot at head coach at some time, somewhere.

Wish in one hand and **** in the other to see which one fills up faster...........................

Hines won't be HC-ing here anytime soon. Let it play out and maybe 3-4 years he may get an actual shot, Tomlin hopefully will be leaving about then.

Salute the nation

It would be a leap not having been a coordinator. Seems like a Rooney Rule got that out of the way.
No one is hiring a college WR coach to be an NFL head coach. I do think Hines will be a good coach but he needs to spend a few seasons as an NFL OC first.
Right now Bieniemy, Staley, and Leftwich are kinda busy to be doing interviews.
Hines spent one season as the Jets WR coach and they were at or near the bottom in passing, although granted the Jets have a number of other issues.
I know just the place where he could be the new OC.
