Honor of Fame.

Salida, Colorado. We got 4 mule deer and 1 bull elk. Back home in Idaho now with a late season muzzleloader tag for mule deer and a cow elk tag.

Do you process everything yourself or locker plant ?

Do you keep and eat or donate to friends / neighbors / food pantry ?

Just curious.

WHERE ARE THE DEER PICS???!!!

Moose is amazing
My favorite is caribou or rocky big horn tenderloin. Open fire. Cast Iron. Butter, garlic, salt. Any day,any time.

My dad would take me to work in the construction industry already when I was 12. Of course all the guys his age took me under their wings and when I think about it,taught me many of life’s lessons. Not always the right ones of course.
One in particular I became great friends with ,although he was 25 years older,I got to know his kids, wife, formed a great bond that lasts to today.

Herb would build houses off hunting season, but his true passion was hunting. The man is simply a legend. He grew his guiding outfit to the biggest in BC,sold that then grew another to the biggest in the Yukon. Has hunted anywhere in the world that he wanted to. His trophy room is something else. At 88 years old he can out climb me and most of us 10 fold. His story telling is off the charts. Drinking beer around a fire listening to his stories are just something else. They should write a book or a movie about this guy. But of course he thinks tv watching or actors are a bunch of *******.

One of my favorite stories was when a famous college QB and his dad from California came to a hunt for black bear In B.C. I would always bug him for the name but he could never remember. He thought baseball or football players were a bunch of ******* too. Herb made the National team in canoe racing and was top in Kayak racing. He thought that was real sports. Anyways I guess these guys came with lots of money and that real attitude. They asked for him specifically to guide....wanted this.....wanted that. He said no....I’ll give you the kid over there. They basically laughed and said WTF.

Johnny was Herb’s kid, probably 15-16 at the time. Tall gangly long stringy blonde hair with a red bandana. A hunter since he could walk. The dad of the QB started complaining, that there was no way this kid could keep up with him. Herb just smiled and asked if he wanted a friendly little wager. The coastal mountains in B.C. are brutal. Herb gave Johnny a wink and told him to show them the sites. They came back a couple days later, with a cougar and black bear.
I guess Jonny ran them up one side then down the other, ran them ragged. To their credit, they were very humbled. Herb had wagered an extra 1000$ that Johnny would be a satisfactory guide, and they actually tipped Johnny an extra 2000$. Back in probably 1980, that was a nice bit of extra change. Of course when you hear Herb tell the story you are on the floor laughing.

Johnny has the biggest hunting area now on Vancouver Island. When you see the TV Show Alone, that is his type of area. Many seasons have been shot on Vancouver Island. Primitive and Brutal. The real wilderness. He also has a huge area in the Chilcolton. Grizzly Bear country. Does very well for himself. Times have changed everything is about social media and dealing with the land claims,of course. Spend just as much time with rules and regulations, politics as you do hunting in that business now.

Herb still takes on the odd guide, but likes to shoot things with his camera now. His stories are endless and in my eyes, timeless.

Got a little bored of football this week after that game, thought I’d switch it up a bit.

NICE Steelmann, great story and thanks for sharing it.

Good to tell it Drink. I know you’re in HVAC and plumbing? Bet you have a few construction stories to tell.

I’ll leave you with another quick story about Herb. I’ve got 4 kids and used to complain all the time at the coffee shop with the construction boys about the cost and amount of food I would go through. I was also obviously a lot younger.

One day he gives me a call and says to come on up. He was driving a f-350 crew cab flat deck at the time. Doghouse for his coon dogs built against the bulkhead. I see the truck listing to one side and think WTF? He’s got his chainsaw up there and a big tarp covering up a bulk form. He opens up the tarp and there’s a ******* huge Buffalo head strapped down. Beside was sections of the Buffalo. The what I call blowhole or throat going into the body was as wide as me. Never seen anything like it.
He starts up his chainsaw and cuts off a piece like from the shoulder to the shank. Throws it in a double construction garbage bag and yells at one of his guys to throw it in the back of my truck. It took two of them. This all happens in like 5 minutes and I’m on my way. Of course I know nothing about nothing about how to break it down into pieces, freezer wrap....nothing. And I’m thinking WTF now? I get it to a retail butcher I had done work for in the past. He spent his Sunday making a ton of hamburger meat, mix sausages, and roasts. Think he charged 100$ and had a bit of the meat for himself. There was a big time amount of meat.

Herb had got invited to a last minute horseback Buffalo hunt by one of his old customers in Alberta. And I sure got part of the rewards.
