Mrs. Fan and I just watched this. Good stuff. The reenactment was stupid, but the four guys together was cool.
We youtubed the black and white coaches' film. Very interesting. To me, that film made it more clear the call was correct as reported. I forgot about the ref's phone call. I wish there was more info on that.

I've heard different versions of that. One what Madden said in the video Falco posted, and the other that he called the NFL security people or the police to see if they could get escorted out of the stadium if the fans rioted and they said you take your chances, so they ruled TD.
I'll bet they called New York and whomever from the officials there was watching the game told the ref in Three Rivers they couldn't tell from the TV broadcast and to go with the ruling on the field. And that's another thing...Raider fans claim just like Madden did that they used replay and that was illegal at the time...but if they hadn't it would not have mattered anyway because the officials on the field ruled TD. If the Raiders had any hope it would come from replay. You can see from the end zone angle, the side judge(I think it's the SJ) behind Franco signals TD.
I still think that was the first use of instant replay. LOL.
My dad who grew up in Pittsburgh told me that it was that they called to see if they could get escorted out if they changed the call. Always thought that was hilarious. I believe it. Glad they called it a TD

Out of the two possibilities, that one( or New York not being able to tell anything) seems less likely. I say that because from all the broadcast television angles you can't tell anything. The one you can tell something from is the motion picture film camera that is way up filming the whole field for the NFL... the "coaches film," what they now call the All-22 view. That film would not be accessible at that moment since it had to be developed of course.To me it sure seems like the ball never touched the ground from that film. I've watched it frame by frame.
Now did Fuqua touch it? That we'll never know, and he'll never tell. He has the T-shirt to prove it.
You know who had that coaches film? The Raiders...the Steelers didn't have a copy. It was found in 2019.
For years Madden and Al Davis said the refs didn't signal a TD, the ball hit the ground, the ball hit Frenchy.....is that why they kept the film locked away? Was it because it showed Franco caught it cleanly? Maybe they didn't even remember they had it...who knows.
