The Pittsburgh Steelers are 3-3 going into their bye week. After winning their first game in Buffalo, it went downhill very fast for the Steelers. They would go on to lose their next three games and players along the way, including guys like Tyson Alualu, and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Replacing both is hard, but the Steelers might have found the answer to filling in the void for JuJu.

The Steelers would try to bring in some talent, but where will the answer come to fill in for JuJu? Is it Anthony Miller who they just signed to the practice squad? Is it finally James Washington‘s time to shine? My guess is it’s going to be the 2nd round pick from Penn State, Pat Freiermuth.

Pat Freiermuth

The rookie had himself an impressive preseason, but started off very slow behind Eric Ebron who was the number one tight end entering the regular season. Prior to this past weekend’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, Pat only had 11 targets total in the previous five games. But Sunday night, in the first game without JuJu, Pat made his mark. Pat would have 7 targets which is a huge jump from any of the past five games. A lot of his catches would be in the same range that JuJu would usually get (in that 3 to 9-yard range. Could “Muth” be the guy to fit the void left by Smith-Schuster? The early signs would say yes, but the next few weeks after the bye will make it more clear for the young tight end. The Steelers will find out more if the man from the Penn State is the answer as they go to Cleveland on Halloween.

Nice read !!!!!

The Seachickens game you mentioned he was targeted 7 time................... You failed to mention he had 7 receptions as well, 100% catch ratio. Ebron has never had that ratio in any game while here with the STEELERS (I'm pretty sure but guessing non the less).

Freirmuth is the real deal given the oportunity. I want success for him and our STEELERS but his solid performance and continuation will help that go a long ways.

Shouldn't be all that hard. Dude was averaging 3 catches a game prior to injury. He's hardly been an irreplaceable part of the offense. He could be an enormous asset, but this offense plays to no one's strengths.

why not use washington more than ray ben said last year he really trusts james in key situations give him a shot to move the chains with some easy slants and deep slot corner routes

I guess they replace JuJu by sitting Washington and refusing to put him on the field unless a WR actually dies in the middle of a game. And then... only if RayRay isn't available.

I'm late to this but you're spot on. They don't use any of JuJu's strengths anymore and basically use him as an extension of the running game.

I wonder if they plan on using the newly acquired Anthony Miller? This guy had a couple good seasons in Chicago playing with Trubiski as his QB. He’s a hell of a lot better than Ray Ray and JWash. It’s been quiet this week about him so maybe things heat up next week.

They do. The guy is not being used properly
