I think i would rather have someone outside come in. We had 3 good games. 2 were against a really bad Bengals defense and one was against a bad Seattle defense. In the other games things looked very similar to Canada. The line also did not hold up, we couldn't run, and had mitch at QB. Against a decent defense i think the offensive coaches panic and it looks ugly. The Ravens game and playoffs if we get there will give us a better sample
After OC and DC, the third most important assistant is the Oline coach, who often sets Techniques, and Schemes and does the lions share of gameplanning the game specific blocking strategies… our two big deficiencies on O are blocking and the passing game structure… its idiotic that many if not most of our big pass plays are herculean efforts by the receivers…
I am fine with letting Sullivan leave or just return to QB coach.. but a passing game coordinator who calls in game plays would be more beneficial than a whole new OC… because Faulkner has shown the ability to breakdown and target team’s weaknesses… that always shows up in the first two drives of the game…
Here is the thing… an offensive playbook can be over a thousand different plays. Only a hundred or so will be active for a gameplan though… and few teams ever totally scrap a playbook.
I guarantee that there are stil plays from cowhers era in our playbook… maybe even noll… but the most recent OC probably has installed maybe 75% of his plays into it.. and it often takes two to three years to totally transition away from an OCs plays… because you can only install so much per season without overwhelming the players…
We are going to have to have an X’s and O’s passing game guy redevelop all the route concepts that Canada half assed..
Canada was a run game specialist so it’s possible that a good portion of that is still useable.
X’s and O’s guys like Haley often don’t have the other half of the coordinator position down… the people interaction and communication of concepts and strategies to the players… they basically are playing real life Madden… and when the players don’t really understand the concept of the play, they tend to adjust in counterproductive ways… make sure tge blockers are targeting the key blocks.. make sure receivers understand the important impacts of their routes… make sure the QB understands what they need to do for blitzes and progressions… don’t just draw it up and expect them to get it picture perfect without guidance
That was a huge flaw of Canada’s…and a strength of Faulkner, who really was one of the few up n comers ever on a Tomlin Staff…
Like I said… Id be open to them keeping him… but if tgey moved on from Austin I would expect an outside hire
