The NFL trade deadline is currently 9 days away on November 2nd, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are a team that many point to when considering who could strike a deal between now and then.
NFL Network Insider, Ian Rapoport is one of those hinting they could be looking to make a move, as he is reporting that other teams are calling the Steelers about the availability of outside linebacker Melvin Ingram.
Not only does he report that teams are calling them, but he also reports the Steelers appear to have “listened and engaged”. The whole excerpt from his article is below.
Ingram was signed by the Steelers this off-season to a one-year deal and was always expected to be in a backup/rotational role to starters TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith. However, injuries to both of them at points through the first six weeks have led to additional playing time for the veteran pass rusher.
While operating as either a starter, backup, or part of the three-man rotation, Ingram has played well against both the run and rushing the passer. However, his snaps have gone down in recent weeks as the defense has gotten back to full health at the linebacker position.
Last week against the Seattle Seahawks, Ingram played just 17 defensive snaps after averaging in the 30s through the first 5 weeks of the season.
Even with his recent reduction in playing time, it would be hard to imagine the Steelers trading him away within the next week or so given that they still are very much in the playoff picture sitting at 3-3 on the season.
The team has little depth behind him as Derrek Tuszka is the next man on the depth chart and has a total of 64 defensive snaps under his belt through his two NFL seasons. So moving on from Ingram would be hoping for a good amount of luck in the health department over the next 11+ weeks.
The only way to imagine Ingram being moved in a trade would be if the Steelers have a backup plan in the works and they were overly enticed by a real good trade offer. They did have serious interest in pass rusher Whitney Mercilus before he ultimately chose to sign with the Green Bay Packers last week.
Unless there is something already in the works behind the scenes, the odds are Ingram will remain on the Steelers for the rest of the season and continue to operate as the teams 3rd outside linebacker.
