THis is why I don't care about top 10 lists or other garbage spewed by idiotic talking heads or writers

Mean Joe should be top three at worst. What defender impacted a team to be a decade juggernaut? These Steelers haters are comical.

I always wonder if they really leave people off these lists because they truly believe that way, or if the known retaliation from Steeler fans will drive clicks to the site 🤷🏻‍♂️
So, the lists are not legit?

Greene probably played before the guy who wrote the article was born. It says no player from the 70's made the list.

There's a lot to be said about legit lists,............... but not much to be said for illegitamit legit lists....................

Nice write up Bob and thank you

You bring up interesting facts and some pretty stron gpoints.

You mention Woodson might have had help as he was on the Baltiwhore 2000 defense well I say that is a possibility but also the STEELERS had three better defenses in the 70's and our 2008 was better as well.

JOE GREEN was on the entire 70s worth of defenses and yet crickets from CBS

bkweat28 has a pretty good possibility in post #3 and I could easily agree with him on that fact.

Excellent and detailed article well worth the read, thanks for posting it Coolie!!!

Yep.
I will entertain your argument for greatest defensive player ever if you say Lawrence Taylor or Reggie White. I will hear you out and will not think you to be insane or retarded.
The fact that Greene isn’t #3, let alone left off the list altogether, immediately makes this list null and void and this Jeff Kerr pseudo-journalist a complete and utter uneducated hack.
He should have titled the piece “My personal favorite top ten defensive players of all time”.
I say this with zero homerism and being completely rational and unbiased.
Lastly, I hate when lists like this include current players. You never know how the rest of the career goes. It’s all speculation until the retirement papers get filed. Being on pace for and trending stats mean nothing when debating all-time greats.

So I'm starting to think that they know we are so passionate that we will read this junk so it's just kind of a click bait. They put it out there to infuriate people into reading.

Some of these younger writers may not have even been born yet. They certainly do not do their research. Which makes them lazy. That list shows it clearly.

That’s no excuse for this hack as he has Deacon Jones and Dick Butkus on the list. They both started before MJG.
Nope, not buying it nor having it.
INEXCUSABLE!

Someone needs to find a new line of work because he obviously sucks at this one

Thats all it is… nobody clicks on a regurgitated standard list… everyone wants to be edgy… just don’t click and they lose

"The 1976 Steelers defense was the best never to win a Super Bowl."

No, the 1976 Steelers defense was the best defense ever to play in the NFL. Seriously, four HOF players (Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham and Mel Blount)? A defense so good that the team went 6-0 with rookie Mike Kruczek at QB ... during which time Kruczek threw 3 picks and 0 TD's.

Repeat, the 1976 defense was so good that the team went 6-0 with a QB who DID NOT THROW A TD PASS IN THOSE SIX GAMES.

The 1976 defense gave up 3.8 yards per play. Not per running play, BUT PER PLAY. The 1976 defense gave up 3.2 yards per rush and 4.5 yards per pass attempt - repeat, 4.5 YPA passing against that defense. The 1976 defense gave up 9 TD passes and recorded 22 picks. The 1976 defense gave up an average of less than 12 first downs per game and less than 10 points per game. Greatest ever defense, hands down.

In closing, **** CBS.

Actually the list isn't too bad. I'd drop down Lewis and Sanders towards the bottom, and replace Donald and Woodson with Greene and Blount, myself. But it's subjective; I wouldn't get bent out of shape about it. They're all great players.

YEP, didn't even have to film / bug / wire / 2am fire alarm / deflate / steroid tb12 / manipulate rules / or any of the other cheating **** known the cheatriot kind.

4-SBs in 6 years but even greater beyond that.

Steroid tb12 ??? Don't know what that is.

Steroid use by the Steelers in the 70's is what haters point to as to how they managed to win 4 SB's in 6 years...accusing them of cheating.

First of all it's not cheating when there were no regulations against it's use.
Secondly, only a select few O lineman took them..3 maybe 4? Joe Greene, Jack Lambert and company didn't use them.
Thirdly, many other players on other teams used them as well. Steroids didn't help San Diego win any Super Bowls.

Fourthly, if you were a 70's Steeler O lineman having to face that D line during practice, wouldn't you want to be on steroids?? lol
