The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the market to add a starting strong safety this offseason. With Terrell Edmunds still unsigned by any NFL team and reports coming out that the Steelers are interested in Edmunds, Tyrann Mathieu, and Damontae Kazee. Of course, the player with the most star power in that group is the “Honey Badger” himself, Mathieu. A lot of Steeler fans have been advocating for the signing of Mathieu this offseason as the icing on the cake for this improved Steelers’ defense. It seems as if it’s all of Steeler Nation‘s dream scenario that the Honey Badger comes to Pittsburgh.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane, all the way back to pre-draft 2013 when Mathieu was probably the most talented collegiate athlete coming out that year. Last April, former Steelers’ great, CB Ike Taylor revealed some secrets from that year when he sat down with Pittsburgh Post- Gazette Sports’ journalist Brian Batko. Taylor ended the conversation by saying that he and former Steelers’ safety Ryan Clark begged for the Steelers’ brass to draft Mathieu. Check out the full clip below via Batko’s Twitter:
Instead, that year, the Steelers drafted two players ahead of Mathieu, OLB Jarvis Jones and RB Le’Veon Bell. We all know how both of those stories ended.
Jones finished his career with 6 sacks, 130 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 17 QB hits, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 interceptions, and 9 passes defensed. Without going into much detail, this was a less than stellar performance from a 1st round edge rusher, who many refer to as a bust.
Bell battled it out with the Steelers during contract negotiations after putting together stellar seasons for the Steelers’ offense. Eventually, the running back signed with the New York Jets during free agency after holding out all of the 2018 season. The rest of his career came and went with many other teams and he had to realize the grass was not in fact greener on the other side of the black and gold. In Bell’s career he totaled, 6, 554 yards on 1,595 carries and 42 touchdowns. As a running back, Bell has also tallied 399 receptions for 3,289 yards, and 9 touchdowns.
In the same timeframe, Mathieu has been a versatile chess piece on defense for the Arizona Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs. Mathieu has tallied 26 interceptions for 3 touchdowns, 4 forced fumbles, 6 fumble recoveries, 10 sacks, 76 passes defensed, 610 tackles, 41 tackles for loss, and 25 QB hits.
Will the Steelers correct the mistake of passing on the Honey Badger in 2013 by signing him as a free agent this offseason? Sound off in the comment section below!

With chatter about Tyrann Mathieu still being out there and the Steelers still needing a safety, I just realized I still have this audio from last April when @Ike_SwagginU joined me on the @PGSportsNow Pod of Steel. Not even sure Ike remembers telling me this, but take a listen… pic.twitter.com/MOsoVXIafG
