Initial Thoughts on bengal Game

If you believe that this is Austin's defense.

Even if isnt Austin's defense he still needs to go because clearly hes not influential or trustworthy enough to incorporate anything meaningful into this defense. At some point you would think he would think about his own career. He'll never get another job anywhere. I would never allow someone to dictate my future like that.

The only way that happens is if Tomlin retires. Steelers can't fire the Rooney Rule coach.

I know you guys like to use the "Rooney Rule" like you use "fatigue". They won't fire him, but this is the thing. If he hasn't shown any signs of coming close to a SB by the time his contract ends there will be no obligation to resign him after that because everything he could possibly accomplish as a coach would have been fulfilled by the time his current contract expires including the longest win streak by a coach (because he wont have any losing seasons. He just won't.) They dont have to be tied to him like that. They can move on and there's no perceived backlash or whatever you guys may be concerned about not that it would be now.

I’ll add this. They were the road team on Thursday and that’s a crap sandwich. These Thursday games are BS. The road team is at a huge disadvantage. That’s why I’m not freaking out.

Having said that, the bengals suck and the Steelers should have won even on a short week. Did they need a full week of prep to know they should cover Jamar Chase?

This was a huge loss. The Steelers could have had a commanding lead in the north and trey pissed it away. This is tge game you look at when they potentially lose the division down the line.

I've said this before: Tomlin is no fool.

After inheriting one of the greatest rosters a first-year coach has ever seen, and winning a Super Bowl a few years later with many of those players, he's been able to convince the national media (and more importantly, the Steelers' front office) that he is one of the best head coaches in the NFL. He's been astronomically compensated in relation to his actual coaching ability. MT parlayed his gift of gab way back in 2007 to secure the pole position under the Rooney Rule, and he has maintained the ultimate job security because of it. His net worth is well over $30 million.

Sometimes you simply have to hand it to an outstanding con man.

And yet somehow the Steelers were up 10-0 on the road on Thursday night. And one holding penalty away from starting out 14-0.

That is a potential silver lining, especially with several of their key guys on defense over 30 and probably needing the full week of rest a lot more than the younger guys.

However, the defense has struggled for most of the season.

Justin Fields looked like Lamar Jackson against them and has been terrible since, and the Steelers were already near the bottom of the league in pass defense before the Bengals game, I believe.

It's generally been the same things we've been seeing for a long time in which if they don't generate a million sacks and turnovers, they cannot stop anyone.

The growing problem is that Watt and Heyward are starting to become less consistent, and they need better pass coverage to compensate.

The secondary play has been a sore spot for years now, at least since the first couple years Joe Haden and Minkah were playing together.
